SHAPED FOR SERVICE

1 PETER 4:10-1110 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful

stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength

God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the

glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

GOD IS SEEKING FULL SERVICE FOR THE CHURCH.

1 PETER 4:10 (NAS)

10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of

the manifold grace of God.

SERVICE is SHAPED by a

GRACE perspective.

GRACE

In mercy, God does not give us what we deserve; in grace, He

gives us what we don’t deserve.

SERVICE is a STEWARDSHIP of GRACE.

GRACE vs. MERCY (Max Lucado)

“Not just mercies, mind you, but grace. Grace goes beyond mercy.

Mercy gave Ruth some food. Grace gave her a husband and a home.

Mercy gave the prodigal son a second chance. Grace threw him a

party.

GRACE vs. MERCY (Max Lucado)

Mercy prompted the Samaritan to bandage the wounds of the victim. Grace prompted him to leave his credit card as payment for the

victim’s care. Mercy gave the thief on the cross. Grace escorted him into paradise. Mercy pardons us.

Grace woos and weds us!”

1 PETER 4:10 (NAS)

10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of

the manifold grace of God.

2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 (ESV)

8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all-

sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every

good work.

GOD HAS UNIQUELY

GIFTED HIS PEOPLE TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER.

1 PETER 4:10 (NAS)

HOW DO I DISCOVER

MY GIFTEDNESS

?

WHAT HAS GOD GIVEN

ME A PASSION FOR?

JEREMIAH 20:9

9 But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his

name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I

cannot.

WHAT IS THE SHAPE OF MY PERSONALITY?

PSALMS 139:1-6

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my

thoughts from afar.3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you

are familiar with all my ways.

PSALMS 139:1-64 Before a word is on my tongue

you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before,

and you lay your hand upon me.6 Such knowledge is too wonderful

for me, too lofty for me to attain.

PSALMS 139:13-15For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,

when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

HOW HAVE I BEEN SHAPED BY MY PAST

EXPERIENCES?

LUKE 7:36-3936 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the

Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the

Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.

LUKE 7:36-3938 As she stood behind him at his feet

weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would

know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

HESUS

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-3112 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one

body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles,

slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is

not made up of one part but of many.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-3115 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the

body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not

for that reason stop being part of the body.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-3117 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would

the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where

would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-3121 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I

don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On

the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are

indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are

unpresentable are treated with special modesty,

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-3124 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but

that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers,

every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-31

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God

has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third

teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of

different kinds of tongues.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-31

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in

tongues[d]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.
