NEW DELHI, June 13:

Lt Gen Amit Sharma hasbeen promoted as ArmyCommander and appointedCommander-in-Chief, StrategicForces Command which looksafter the nuclear arsenal of thecountry, an Army spokespersonsaid today.

He replaces Vice Admiral SP S Cheema as the head of thetri-services command as theNavy officer has moved toKochi to head the Navy’sSouthern Command there.

Sharma (58) was the Chief ofStaff of Japiur-based South

Western Command of the armyand had headed the force’s elite21 Strike Corps.

The responsibility of theStrategic Forces Command is tooperationalise the directives ofthe Nuclear CommandAuthority (NCA).

The Command has the soleresponsibility of initiating theprocess of delivering nuclearweapons and warheads afteracquiring explicit approval fromNCA.

Lt Gen Sharma was commis-sioned in 45 Cavalry inDecember 1976 and has over theyears held numerous command,staff and instructional appoint-ments in all operational sectorsincluding counter insurgencyareas.

He had the distinction ofhaving served as ColonelAdministration of an InfantryDivision in Jammu & Kashmir,Colonel General Staff of aMountain Division in easternsector and Brigadier GeneralStaff of a strike corps.

Lt Gen Amit Sharma hadalso served as Defence Attachein Indian Embassy in Pariswhere he was responsible forArmy and Naval cooperationwith France, Belgium,

Netherlands and Luxembourg.He has commanded an armouredregiment, an independentarmoured brigade in western

deserts, an infantry division in aStrike Corps and the StrikeCorps in the Southern Theatre.(PTI)
