Satisfying growth demands for maritime

communications Michael Carter – Sales Director Network and Data Services

Overview

• Telenor Satellite : TODAY

• Trends in maritime communications

• THOR 7 Ka band services

• Satellite fleet and teleport resources

2

Delivering strong growth and profit in data

communications

•Our satellite fleet offers attractive

coverage in key regions stretching from

Greenland to the Persian Gulf

•Long tradition of providing maritime VSAT

services in Europe

•Wholesale satellite capacity and

connectivity across the globe

•High powered coverage in the Middle

East for land-based broadband

communication services

3

Significant Ka bandwidth increase in the next decade

EuroConsult projects that by 2021 the VSAT

market will account for the majority of satellite-

based maritime communication revenues.

Less than 5% of vessels have VSAT today

4

User applications will drive capacity requirements

Engine manufacturers and

other vendors are building

their systems with sensor in

vessels and run algorithms

to interpret data, for

maintenance, remote

diagnostics, customer

support and product

improvement purpose.

Trend for more and

more automation on-

board with an

increasing amount of

data to be tracked

Cloud computing will help

shipping companies reduce IT

investment and improve

efficiency

BYOD is becoming popular as

communications become more

wireless

Significant

bandwidth

increase

in the next

decade

Increasing use of video

applications with high data rate

requirements

5

Impacts from HTS capacity over the oceans

• Capacity prices per Mbps will go down as there

becomes a significant increase in capacity which will

break the supply demand balance in the short term.

• Services will allow for new bandwidth intense

applications

• New maritime markets and end users will become

addressable for satellite broadband

6

The difference between HTS vs regular satellites

7

Why Telenor Satellite invested in HTS ?

Ku band frequencies are increasingly crowded

• New orbital positions are difficult to acquire

• Ku band high paying Broadcast satellite services are utilising

all the Ku available, particularly in Europe.

Regulatory

• Ka band – at least to Telenor, opens up 2.5GHz of spectrum

in two polarisations

Ka band technology has matured

• All major VSAT antenna manufacturers now make Ka band

antennas

High bandwidth

• We can offer higher bandwidth through smaller antennas

8

THOR 7 provides regional coverage within a high

maritime demand region

9

THOR 7 HTS service packages

Broadband

communication

services

for fishing vessels

from 512/128 kbps

to 12/3 Mbps on

60 cm antennas

10

24/6Mbps or even higher in the future for super yachts,

cruise liners and ferries

11

Current status-

THOR 7 readiness

• Presently in the BETA customer testing

phase

• Customers taking part are highly satisfied

with the service

• Commercial launch to take place mid April

2016
