Sarracenia ‘Scarlet Belle’
What the heck are
Sarracenias?!
Sarracenias are carnivorous pitcher plants
native to the eastern part of North America.
What states are these plants native to??
Is the Sarracenia ‘Scarlet Belle’
pitcher plants a hybrid??
YES!
What two species was cross bred?
S. leucophylla +
S. psittacina
Who developed
this beautiful plant??
A genius man named Bob Hanrahan
Did Bob do this by accident?
No way!!
How did he cultivate such an amazing
plant? His goal was to create a
Sarracenia that was: -rich in color
-rapid and abundant in growth -can be grown in many different
environments -with a wondrous shape
Why did he choose S.
leucophylla?
For their color formation, and how it grows well in wet and semi-dry grasslands.
Why did he choose S. psittacina?
Mainly because this species produces massive amounts of pitchers in a rosetted shape, and also maintains
their color even when dormant.
Why did he name it the
‘Scarlet Belle’?It was actually his son and
his son’s fiancée who named it on August 7th, 2002
because his son’s fiancée is a “belle”, and the color
theme for their wedding just happened to be scarlet red.
