Principal’s ReportPOSITIVE EDUCATION
We are very grateful to Where There’s a Will for their ongoing support in relation to positive education across the Upper Hunter. Through their generosity we have had the opportunity to have four of our staff begin their studies for the Professional Certificate in Education (Positive Education) delivered by the University of Melbourne.
The course centres around the science of positive psychology and positive education. Our staff will learn about different theories of wellbeing and flourishing, examine core positive psychology constructs relevant to education, and explore positive interventions that can be used in classrooms and across schools to build wellbeing and resilience in students and staff. In addition to this our staff will also be learning how to build Positive Education Communities.
Exciting times ahead for these staff, our students and our school community as a whole!
CLASS VISITS
It has been my great pleasure to be invited into a number of classrooms in the last week to see first hand the engaging creativity and learning taking place in our English, Visual Art and Technology classrooms. Thank you to Miss Hopkins, Miss Golden and Ms Stokes for allowing me to share in the experience of your students and thank you to the students who shared their learning with me. Over the coming weeks I will be visiting classrooms on both the primary and secondary campus. We are fortunate to have a school with wonderful teachers who provide rich learning opportunities every day. Adam Johnston

YEAR ADVISOR COMMENT: Charles has started high school with an exemplary outlook to his education. The basic skills do not come easily for him but applying himself to work at his ability does. This has seen Charles achieve in class, in extra-curricular activities and socially. I my eyes the strength of Charles that has seen him earn student of the week is his confidence that if he doesn’t achieve what he set his mind to by himself that through asking for help and with the support of teachers he certainly can.

WELCOME TO OUR COLOURFUL KINDERS!
Our transition to school program for 2018 has begun. It was fantastic opportunity to show our ‘Colourful Kinders’ what school is like and for them to spend time in the classroom plus meeting their own special buddies. We have been providing this style of transition for many years and have reaped the benefits of very settled, comfortable and happy students and parents. We look forward to many more visits and for them to be part of our up coming school play with a special song about feelings. If you have any questions or are interested in finding out more please contact the school.
record the mass of objects. For example how many marbles are needed to balance a tennis ball.
Last Thursday we had another Choose Maths visit. The day was spent with two specialist mathematic educators working with teachers in the classroom to enhance and further develop mathematical concepts and promoting the importance of maths in everyday situations. It is interesting to stop and think about in any given day how much maths is used (including estimating). From the cereal in the morning and working out if there is enough milk to have cereal and a cup of tea. To reading the fuel gauge to work out if we have enough fuel to get to Muswellbrook and back. Maths is everywhere and is vital for us in all that we do.
We have also been exploring the mass of objects during Maths which has given as an opportunity for lots of hands on activities. Kinder have discussed heavy and light, Year 1 have been using the pan balance to demonstrate lighter and heavier and Year 2 have also be using the pan balance but have been using materials to

who is Australia’s only Saint. The students have been challenged this week to identify people who are acting like Mary MacKillop. Some actions that people saw were thinking of others, including others in their play, sharing things and helping people to feel better when they were upset. The most important message from Mary MacKillop was ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’.

During Geography, the Infants’ classroom is discovering that the world is a much bigger place than Merriwa. Last week we enjoyed the challenge of placing the continents together to form a world map. We have also discussed that the world isn’t flat but rather the same shape as a sphere.
Kindergarten continue to work on visual literacy and how pictures and images can give so much information especially when we spend time looking closely at details used. Year One and Two are exploring the aspects which make up an information report. They are in the process of writing their own information report ensuring that they have a title, opening statement, descriptions and a concluding statement.
All students are continuing to enjoy our cooking lessons and trying new things. Many students are enjoying taking home the recipes and trying them out with the rest of their families.
During Religion the students have been discussing the way that we and others pray. There are two main ways that we pray: either together with others called Communal Prayer or individually called Personal Prayer. Both forms are for different purposes and occasions but each are both similar in that theyallow us to talk to God.
Last week was the feast day of Mary MacKillop,

MRS AUSTIN GOES BACK TO SCHOOL!
The University of Melbourne is coming to the Upper Hunter to deliver a Professional Certificate of Education (Positive Education) to 33 teachers in the Upper Hunter district, including our very own Mrs Austin. This amazing opportunity has been funded by ‘Where there’s a Will’, a not for profit charity established in the Upper Hunter in 2016 to address significant mental health issues facing the community.
Through the foundation’s fundraising efforts, they have been able to cover the hefty $6000.00 cost of the course for each participant. This is a wonderful opportunity for Mrs Austin and all the other participating teachers in the region.
It will provide her with additional skills and knowledge to lead school wellbeing programs to support all students. Congratulations Mrs Austin. We wish you all the best in your studies and greatly appreciate the Where there’s a Will Foundation for providing school’s in our area with such brilliant opportunities.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARYWomen’s Guild Meeting - First Thursday MonthlyMessy Church - Parish Hall - Last Friday Monthly: 3.30pm Men’s Breakfast - Parish Hall - Third Saturday: 7.30amREFLECTION: PENTECOST 4 Matthew 15:21-28From the evidence of the Gospels it is clear that Jesus worked primarily within the land of Palestine and saw himself involved in a mission to the people of Israel. He rarely ventured beyond Israel to the Gentiles. In this episode Jesus clearly states this understanding of his mission….. But a woman, a Gentile, challenges him to go further. In response to her witty reply, Jesus does as she wishes – in effect he changes his understanding of his mission – it can include Gentiles!
At the time when the Gospels are being written, this story would have been very important, for some disciples were taking the Gospel to the Gentiles, while others thought of the mission primarily within Judaism. This episode would have helped the community to reach out beyond the narrow confines of Judaism as Jesus did on this occasion.
Jesus’ words to the woman are harsh, as he uses a derogatory idiom of his time, ‘Gentile dogs’, to rebuke her: ‘It’s not fair to take what is meant for the children of Israel and throw it to the Gentile dogs’. The woman very cleverly takes up his image and asks for the scraps that fall from the table. You may recall that Jesus has in fact fed the children of Israel in the story of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, and there were basket-loads of scraps left over. Jesus commends her great faith and cures her daughter.
This woman is a strong character, prepared to argue with Jesus as Abraham, Moses and Job once argued with God. She provides me with a good model of vigorous prayer.

Merriwa Rugby League Football Club
Last weekend was ‘Where there’s a Will’ round, with ladies wearing
coloured socks and reserve grade had the jerseys with ‘Where there’s a Will’ logo, which will be auctioned off at the football presentation.
Ladies League tag kicked off at 11.00am after a photo was taken of both teams with their WTAW socks.
We started fairly slow, only getting two tries in the first half. Thankfully after the break we came back a little stronger, scoring 6 more tries, giving us a final score of 42-0.
Players Player: Madison Swan
Good work ladies.
Remember to get to training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm.
What a good way to end the 2017 season for Reserve Grade with a win.
The boys started the game with the first try, right

under the post. A few calls could have went our way which would have helped our score be a bit higher but anyway.
The running by most players was great with them running straight and hard.
Reece Hancock and Seth Morgan both a shot at goal and both converting. Ending the game with a score of 26-12.
They even had a little brawl break out in the last 3 minutes of the game.
Players Player (who received the WTAW pewter mug): N icho las Mcloughlin
Good work, Reserve Grade.
Thank you Ben Robins for coaching the Reserve Grade team this year and we all hope you enjoyed it. Well done.
