Sandvik Steel Conveyor Belts Case study Schröders Fleisch
Stainless steel belts were, for many years, the conveying
material of choice for a multitude of processing and
handling applications in the food processing industry,
in particular meat cutting/processing systems.
While their use declined as a result of the introduction
of cheaper belt materials, this trend is now showing
clear signs of reversing as the meat processing industry
rediscovers the exceptional hygienic properties of the
steel belt. And alongside the ease of cleaning that ensures
no risk of cross contamination, processors are also
experiencing the benefits of better space utilisation and
excellent plant availability.

One such company is Schröders Fleisch in Willich,
Germany, a medium-sized family-owned enterprise. The
primary activity of this long-established company from the
Lower Rhine region is the dismembering of mainly fresh
prime-quality beef. The company has recently commissi-
oned a conveying line furnished by ITEC and equipped
with a Sandvik steel conveyor belt and other Sandvik
components. The conveyor serves as connecting link
between the dismembering lines and the packaging lines.
“The smooth and hard surface of steel belts offers
numerous advantages,” said Michael Steinsträter,
General Manager of ITEC GmbH, a medium-sized
plant construction company that has designed the new
plant for Schröders.
“There are no holes, textures or fibers which could
promote the growth of bacteria. A steel belt can be
cleaned very easily and effectively – time savings of
more than 60 % have been experienced – so consump-
tion of water and cleaning agents is lower. Conveying
systems equipped with steel belts have a long service life
and low maintenance requirements, which translates
into significant cost savings.
According to Mr Steinsträter, this combination of high
standards of hygiene and significant operational savings
makes steel belt lines “the obvious first-choice solution”
for meat dismembering facilities. And these are exactly

“When it comes to hygiene in a dismembering operation, steel belts are superior to any other belt material.”
Cleaning of the steel belt: 60% faster and more efficient
the advantages that convinced Michael Schröders, owner
of Schröders GmbH, to decide in favour of the steel belt
conveying technology for the new line. “When it comes
to hygiene in a dismembering operation, steel belts are
superior to any other belt material. We are a supplier
of high quality products which means excellent hygiene
and cleaning performance is of utmost significance,“
emphasized Mr Schröders. “The design of the steel belt
conveying system has been another important factor.
Its compact form and small-size return pulleys meant it
could be easily integrated into the existing infrastructure
of the operation.“
The renaissance of steel belt conveyors for use with meat
dismembering systems is closely related to the new de-
sign of steel belt equipment. “The space requirement of
equipment plays a decisive role in modern operations,“
said Alois Alexander, Senior Belt Supervisor at Sandvik
Process Systems. “State-of-the art steel belt lines are
much more compact than before. This is primarily due
to a reduction in the size of return pulley diameters.
Nowadays, the design of steel belt systems enables them
to be sited wherever they are needed in a facility.“

benefits of retrofitting steel belts to your conveying and
