May Program Date, Time, and Place Change
The date, time, and place of our May meeting has been changed to:
Sunday, May 18, 2014 1:00pm to 5:00pm
Hosts: Jimmy and Ann Black 225 Greystone Circle
Boerne, TX 78006 The meeting date was changed to avoid rush hour traffic on a Wednesday night. Weeknight rush hour traffic would make it tough for members to get to the Black’s for the meeting at the regular time. We regret any scheduling inconvenience caused by this change and hope you’ll all come out to see the Black's lovely landscape. Food will be provided by the club and hosts. Please bring a hat, folding chair if you wish, and bug spray. The Blacks have a swimming pool, poolside bathroom, plenty of tables and chairs and shade, and will have plants available for purchase. Jimmy will give a presentation about his experiences landscaping
in deer country. For planning purposes, Please RSVP to 219-793-4600 or annblack@gvtc.com

Organization really does pay off! The Show Committee made it a goal to create THE Show
& Sale guide to cover all the ‘need to know’ and ‘need to do’ information and then divide
the work between the Show Chairs. I cannot thank them enough for making their part of
the Show & Sale run smoothly and taking some of the burden off of my shoulders.
A huge ROUND OF APPLAUSE to Marty Ruona (Advertising), Grace Fry (Club Table), Linda
Draper (Educational Displays), Alice Knight (Auction), Don Clark (Treasurer), Claude Town-
send (Fiesta Medal Sales) and Lisa Kibler (Refreshments).
Thanks to these members for volunteering during the Show & Sale: Bill Fry, Eula Townsend,
Bobby Crabb, Loretta Corimer, Ellie Drileck, Lana Daniel, Suzanna Harrison, Barbara
Wilborn, Paul Kibler, Bob Guernsey, Carol Blocker, Manny Zamora, Claire Rodriguez, Larry
Murphy, Gerald & Sidney Yarbrough, Debbie Braly, Ernie Akers, Ana Huron, Larry Draper,
Stephen Jackson, Yolanda Medina, Tess Weaver, Allen Linder, and Ashley Cherry. Let me
know if I forgot anyone – I want to recognize the efforts of all our volunteers.
I hope everyone who visited to Show & Sale saw our New & Improved additions. The club
table was hard to miss with bright balloons, SACXS banner, table decorations, and digital
photo frame showing rotating photos of club functions and current as well as past mem-
bers. Several of the dealers used photo frames as well.
Next to the club table was our first ever Silent Auction on Thursday. It was very successful
and every item was a donation.
Raffle tickets sold at the Club Table every day brought in a tidy sum as well. Many visitors
and members alike flocked to purchase a chance on our nicely grown raffle plants.
The 2 day auction was a record-breaker thanks to more specimen, rare, and landscape
succulent offerings and our auctioneer, Marty Ruona.

OUR BEST SHOW!!...continued
Many people including the vendors remarked on the heavier than usual crowds of shoppers.
The shoppers had 9 vendors selling succulents and pottery to choose from including Paul &
Lisa Kibler, Doug Coates, Ann & Jimmy Black, Richard & Carol Blocker, Eric Pedley, Marty
Ruona, Joyce Hochtritt, Dale Neese, and Alice Knight.
This was our third year of setting up only Educational Displays which were judged by the pub-
lic. Congrats to top winners – Claude Townsend and Debbie Braly. As usual, the displays
were informative, creative, and very popular. Thanks to these members for creating displays –
Claude Townsend, Paul Kibler, Carol Blocker, Claire Rodriguez, Bob Guernsey, Tess Weaver,
Debbie Braly, Manny Zamora, Don Snyder, Gary & Lana Daniel, Doug Coates, Grace Fry,
Stephen Jackson, Linda Draper, and myself. We actually ran out of room on the tables! Not to
worry, though, we’ll make more space for next year.
We should be proud of the efforts of all who made a commitment to SACXS during the 2014
Show & Sale. We had 12 new members join – let’s make them feel welcome. I hope you read
every name in this report and noticed that many members volunteered more than once. It
takes a group of committed members to put together the kind of Show & Sale we had this
year.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Barbara Schulze, SACXS 2014 Show & Sale Chairman

4M RANCH FIELD TRIP By Linda Draper
Photos by Claude Townsend and Linda Draper
Our Spring 2014 field trip to the McPherson 4M Ranch is in the history books. Twelve mem-bers of our own club and 18 from other clubs across the state enjoyed the Ranch weekend.
Spring is a great time to hunt cactus because so many are in bloom and are easy to spot. The usually elusive Horse Cripplers hold up their bright pink blossoms and say “Here I am”. You could spot a clump of Claret Cups a quarter mile away by their glorious flowers. Folks found a wide range of species to bring home. In addition, lots of rocks, fossils, some Indian artifacts, wood, gravel, and a set of feral hog tusks filled cars on the homeward trek.
It wasn’t all collecting either. Wildlife was abundant with turkeys gobbling right behind the clubhouse. Longhorns met us along the road and posed for pictures. Claude went fishing in the tank, some people took advantage of the shooting range, and lots of us enjoyed sitting on the porch and visiting.
Food, as usual was plentiful and yummy.
I’m ready to go again in the fall.

“THANKS AND WELCOME” HYPERTUFA PARTY
Photos by Marty Ruona
Sunday, May 3 was a day to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done and to welcome new
members to our SACXS “Family”.
About 30 of the people who volunteered to help with the Show and Sale in any way, and new
members who joined at the Show and Sale spent the afternoon at Larry and Linda Draper’s
home making Hypertufa pots, relaxing, visiting and enjoying a light lunch.
Allen Lindner brought a grouping of his beautiful Epiphyllum blossoms for a table centerpiece.
The picture below is from the Show and Sale where he also shared “OH MY!” blossoms on
two separate days astounding guests with their beauty.
It was a time to get acquainted with the new folks and to say thank you to everyone who
worked so hard to make our 2014 Show and Sale the success that it was.

xeric gardening in San Antonio. His decades of local landscaping experience are
documented in this photo slide show. There are yard transformations of all types, from
start to finish. A question and answer
session to follow.
Friends, remember this is your newsletter. Please consider contributing an article, tip, pho-
tos of your favorite plant. Ask a question and I’ll research an answer from some of our expert
growers. There are lots of ways to contribute and it will be more fun for all of us if we have a
varied group of contributors.
If you want to submit something, I try to get the newsletter out by the end of the first week
of the month so I need the submission in the end of the previous month. I can work with
whatever constraints you have.
Send your ideas to me at draperl@prodigy.net or call me at 210-828-7224 to discuss.
