CAPITALIZATIONIt is the writing of the

word with its first letter in

uppercase and the

remaining letters in

lowercase.

RULE # 1Capitalize the first word

of the sentence.

EXAMPLESShe studied in UP and

was an activist.

The man saw a charming

lady.

Her teacher likes the

table.

RULE # 2Capitalize proper nouns

and adjectives derived

from proper nouns.

EXAMPLESIra loves ducks.

Vietnam is where Marcus

lives.

The Golden Gate is

located in San Francisco

Bay.

RULE # 3Capitalize titles or

positions when they are

used before names.

EXAMPLESAlso expected to attend the

meeting are President Dane

Galve and Vice President

Deane Nepomuceno.

Senator Miriam Defensor-

Santiago was diagnosed with

lung cancer.

RULE # 4Capitalize the first word

in a quotation even if it is

in the middle of the

sentence.

RULE # 5Capitalize specific

geographical regions. Do

not capitalize directions

(north, south, east, west)

when the it pertains to

the points of the

compass.

EXAMPLESThe family left Tokyo and

drove north.

The Philippines is

located at the south of

Taiwan.

RULE # 6Do not capitalize the

word the before proper

nouns.

EXAMPLESMy favorite book in the

Heroes of Olympus

series is the Mark of

Athena.

the Selection trilogy.

RULE # 7Capitalize a formal title

when it is used as a

direct address.

EXAMPLES“Is my daughter really

diagnosed with leukemia,

Doctor?”

“Can you please sign this

papers, Chief?”

RULE # 8Capitalize kinship or family names

when they precede a specific name or

when they are used in place of a

specific name. Although, they are not

capitalized when they are preceded

with a possessive noun or pronoun,

when they proceed a specific name or

when they are not referring to a

specific person.

arrived at our house

yesterday.

The Cruz siblings were the

most infamous singers in our

school.

There is no father that will

allow that.

RULE # 9Capitalize nicknames.

EXAMPLES“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.

Can I call you Yona?”

“Of course. Should I call

you Ira?”

RULE # 10Capitalize names of God,

specific deities, religious

figures, and holy books

but do not capitalize the

non-specific use of god.

EXAMPLESGod created everything

in this universe.

The people of Greece

believe in various gods.

RULE # 11Capitalize the pronoun “I”

at all times.

I was not able to fulfill my
