PurchaseReprintsoftheirbehavior.Detailedstrainmeasurementstogetherwiththecrackpatternsindicatethattheeffectivewidthoftheslabcontributingtothenegativebendingofthemainbeamisaffectedbythetorsionalyieldingofthespandrelbeam.However,afterthisyielding,adifferentforcemechanism,involvingconcretecompressivestrutsandtensiontiesintheslabandspandrelbeambars,providesmeansoftransferringadditionalforcesfromtheslabbarstothejointregion.Itisimportanttoconsidertheeffectoftheseforces,sincetheyincreasethenegativemomentcapacityofthebeams,and,hence,theymayaffectthehierarchyofyieldingbetweenthecolumnsandthebeams.Designproposals,accountingfortheflowofforcesthroughthespandrelbeam,arepresentedandillustratedbyanumberofexamples.
