Inthiscourse,wewilltakeacloselookatfivepoliticalmovementsandtheirprincipalleaders.Thefivepoliticalmovementsarethetenants’rightsmovementinNewYorkCityintheearly20thcentury,India’sfightforhomerulearoundWorldWarII,theAmericancivilrightsmovementofthe1950’sand1960’s,thefarmworkers’boycottsandmarchesofCaliforniaofthe1960’sand1970’s,andthecurrentstrugglesfordemocracyinBurmaorMyanmar.ThefiveleaderswewillstudyareJacobRiis,MohandasGandhi,MartinLutherKing,Jr.,CesarChavez,andAungSanSuuKyi.

andEnvironmentalDesign(LEED)standardsbecausethefundsforthebuildingproposalwereapprovedbeforetheLEEDrequirementwasineffect:“…newstatefacilitiescosting$5millionormore,fundedonorafterJanuary1,2007,arerequiredtomeettheLEEDsilverstandardoritsequivalent.”

  TherearefourlevelsoftheLEEDstandard:certified,silver,goldandplatinum.NCC’sproposedHealthandScienceCenterdoesnotmeeteventhelowestcertifiedstandard.Recently,GatewayCommunityCollegeunveiledplansforanewcampusthatwouldmeetthegoldstandard.
