Wefinishedoursecondyearofself-selectionlastweek.Alltold,wehadrightaround10,000bookingscreatedbystudentsforthe2016-2017academicyearusingMercury.Thiswasanewrecordforus.Ithinkwedoubledwhatwedidlastyear.

IMPLEMENTATIONSTRATEGYFORLOTTERIESNomatterwhetheryourschedulehas500or16,000+studentsgoingthroughself-selection,controllingthestudents’flowthroughtheprocesswillalwaysresultinabetterexperienceforthosestudents,theirparentsandschoolstaff.HerearesomeofthestrategiesusedatMichiganStateUniversitythatcanbeusedatyourdepartment.

1. Setupspecificallysizedblocksofstudentsallowedintotheprocessatdefinedtimeintervals.Thisallowsboth theserveranddatabaseresourcestooperatewithconsistentperformance.

2. Beconservative insettingup thelotteryprocessifyouhavemultiplestepsrunningatthesametime,likecontractsandself-selection.

3. WorkwithRMStoconfirmthatyourarchitecture isoperatingatthemaximumrecommendedspecifications.AdditionalprocessorsandRAMmemorycanbeadded totheserverasneededforthebestpossibleperformance.

THENUMBERSTELLTHESTORYIntotal,MichiganStateUniversityhadwellover10,000studentsbookaspaceusingself-selectionorbepulledinasaroommate.Thenumbersalonetellastory.

1. Withthecycleforthisyear,MichiganStateUniversitystartedtheroomapplicationprocessintheFallof2015forthe2016-2017academicyear.Approximately16,000+studentswereeligiblefortheself-selectionprocess:

• Sign-upsstartedwith600returningstudentsopting forroomretention.

• About6,000returningstudentssignedupforaspaceusingself-selection.

• Followingthereturningstudentperiod, theuniversitywentlivewithnewstudentspaceself-selectionovera3-weekperiod inwhich71%ofeligiblestudentsselectedaspace.

VisualSelf-Selectionisusedacross37ofourbuildingswithacapacityof17,200students.

Justfromthenumbers,thestudentsareobviouslyunderstandinghowtouseMercury3.

Infact,wehavenewapartmentsgoingonlinethisfallandweareconfidentwearegoingtobeabletoquicklysetthemupwiththenecessarystudentinstructionsandmakethemavailableaspartofthelotteryprocess.
