Hello and Welcome to Spring.
Clocks have jumped forward so adjust your security timers to suit the
lovely lighter nights and when in the garden, remember to always lock your
doors—walk-in burglaries are still happening in Maghull despite our warning
in the last Newsletter – Got UPVC, lift the handle & turn the key. Simples!
— — — — — — — — — —
Thanks go to Geoff who has volunteered to become our Minute Taker.
Check out our Social Media & visit our web pages. Why not start a
group...Just 1 hour every other month will help reduce crime in your road.
— — — — — — — — — —
April = New financial year = Annual subs time
& STILL only £1 = same as in 1990 !!!
You can tell, it isn’t about collecting lots of money, its about actively opting
into becoming a Member.
~ The rule changes to the UK’s National Neighbourhood Watch make this
more important than ever ...If you are not members of MHWA then your
group has to apply to become a Neighbourhood Watch Group, pay the fee
and register yourselves on the National Database. The Coordinator arranges
to be vetted by the Police, requests window stickers and buys lamppost signs
@ £12 each (then has to apply to the Council for their installation)
...And you will still not receive this Newsletter or other MHWA only benefits.

Hello; Welcome to Autumn & our AGM
We end our 25th Anniversary year at our AGM on Monday 17th October
(Happy 26th to us), and it is safe to say that MHWA is in very good health.
Interest in starting new groups continues and again we have had more new
Coordinators arrive than retirements, with surprisingly few groups closing.
As Chair I would like to express my thanks to everyone currently involved;
Firstly our 160+ Coordinators, some who have performed this job for 20+
years and then to your ever-present Secretary Lynne ; Treasurer Anne ; Kim
(social media) ; Geoff (Sefton Village), Betty (Newsletter allocation), May,
John, Alan & Sandra (all 6 are Area Coordinators) ; Keith, Jill and Rob.
Fortunately everyone is continuing for another year
—so far there have been no Committee nominations
nor Official posts, but assistants are definitely needed.
— — — — — — — — — —
Home Security:
BST ends: Clocks go back on 30th Oct just before Halloween and Bonfire
night. 26 years ago HomeWatch was talking about leaving lights on when you
are out—these days timers can do that for you easily (but check those start
times now). We were also suggesting outdoor security lights and making
sure you displayed your RED triangle—these apply more than ever!
Other advice that never goes out of fashion is marking your property.
These days use DNA style Smartwater on your smart phones and TFTs
rather than the UV pens used to write postcodes on the old glass CRT TVs
— — — — — — — — — —
TV Soaps… What do Corrie & Emmerdale have in common? The answer is a
(pretend) close knit community—the interaction between neighbours makes
it compulsive viewing, for many, so could we take a leaf out of their book?
(without the drama obviously). Fewer people walk anywhere these days and
even chatting over the garden fence has become less common, but we are
social creatures—so why not smile at or say hello to a new face every day?

Refreshments & our Prize Draw will be at the Christmas meeting: Mon 12th Dec 2016-17 is my 15 th year in MHWA; 11 years as the IT Man, 8+ producing Newsletters and my 5th but final year as Chairman (tbc) ~ unfortunately I will be unable to devote as much time as a volunteer in the future, but I will leave the Association in a better
and healthier position for the next, yet to be found, Chairperson. This has been a very reluctant decision for me & I will help MHWA all I can, hence I am giving a year notice.
Our thanks go to these advertisers who have
supported us this year.

MHWA = Mike, Lynne, Anne, Betty, Geoff, John, Keith, Kim, May & 163 Coordinators
Good News: Longfold has a replacement group leader & Green Park Drive has a new leader too ~ Thank you to both of you - The leader
of Green Park Drive is looking for helpers in South Meade & Hinchley Green to become deputies.
New Coordinator NEEDED: Sefton Village will shortly be losing a Coordinator so we hope someone will come forward to keep them in
HomeWatch
Last call: 59 houses in Moss Lane could be lost—Note: This could be split into 2 groups
...We are sorry to lose Tebay Close, but no one came forward—so tell your insurance co.
Good News Stop Press:
2 offenders from
Liverpool were given
custodial sentences in
relation to incidents
taking place in Maghull
Here is Chairman Mike presenting a gift and a Mer-
it Certificate to our retiring Treasurer Alan at the
recent MHWA 25th Anniversary
“Bit-of-a-Do” in Maghull Town Hall
CRIME Stop Press:
Walk-in burglaries are still happening in Maghull
despite last Newsletter’s warning – lock your doors to avoid any pain. Simples!
Need an Ambulance fast?
Burglar breaking in? Need
Fire Engine’s Jaws of Life?
Make sure you have your
Number on your front door!
Vital minutes can be lost—
help them to help you faster
New Messaging Service:
The Emergency Services are
currently trailing a new
phone / email / SMS / mobile
app service to inform the
public about incidents etc.
Being Aware and Making Crime Reports:
1/4 of a century ago HomeWatch said “members can recognise strangers
better than the Bobby on the Beat” - these days, with even fewer Police
around, it is more important than ever for us to be aware. It falls to us
to make the community we want—look away and let thieves and anti-
social attitudes ruin it, or do something to actually improve it? No one
would expect you to fight a raging fire or tackle an armed robber but
simply picking up the phone will make a difference and anyone reading
this can do it—if you see it, report it ...and then tell us. ~ Our many
thanks to those Community-minded residents who are already doing this.
CRIME FIGURES for PERIOD: 01/09/16 to 30/09/16
Burglaries from Homes =3 (1 x unlocked front/rear door while owners
were inside, 2 x windows = keys & van stolen and keys, wallet & car stolen)
Station Rd, Green Lane & Pilling Lane Lydiate.
Theft from Vehicles =1 (1 x unlocked vehicle = items stolen)
Seymour Drive Lydiate.
Theft of Vehicles =1 (1 x unauthorised taking of vehicle) Sankey Rd.
Burglary Other =2 (1 x forced shed & 1 x window, money stolen)
Green Lane & Liverpool Road South.
Robbery =1 (1 x victim threatened by 2 masked males armed with knife = demanded
money from till) Liverpool Road Lydiate.
The Police are facing more cuts but reporting criminals means less crime overall ...”we’ll
send someone out” could mean to intercept a crook (not going to your home) or could be
plain clothed Police gathering info, as in cases of drug dealing—so please ring 101 or 999

Arrivals and Departures in your Association:
Retirements: We say a fond farewell to one of our few remaining
1980s Coordinators Bernard Harrison of Turnbridge Road (43
homes) and also to Brenda Westhead who ran Rutherford Road &
Gatley Drive groups since the 1990’s (56 homes).
We are losing Tony Whitehead of Poverty Lane (20 homes since
2012) & Jane Roberts of Poverty Lane (25 homes since 2013) ; also
Mary Ellis of Swan Hey (16 homes since 2013) and Sarah & Tony of
Clent Ave (40 homes since 2014) ~ Thank you to everyone.
...We now need new Coordinators for low no’s of Eastway ; Hunt Road ;
Rutherford Road ; Gatley Drive ; Clent Ave ; Swan Hey & Poverty Lane.
Good News: Thanks go to John Gallagher as a new Coordinator for
South Meade ; Bev who takes over a group in Longfold ; Helen has
volunteered to take over Turnbridge Rd. We expect Ann will soon
be able to take over the high no’s of Poverty Lane and a new
group in Hindley Beech is starting up—more details after vetting
Cold Callers and Bogus tradespersons are in our area now: “I’ve come to read the meter / check your water” or “your roof needs fixing / gutters need cleaning” or “your trees need trimming” or they may try to sell you goods. Legitimate firms can work this way - but so do scammers. Buying on your doorstep is convenient. However, salesmen can use clever tactics to pressurise you into buying something you don’t want or that’s poor value for money. Door-to-door frauds can take many forms, including: • pressure selling • unfair contracts • phoney consumer surveys • bogus charity collections • overpriced or substandard home maintenance or improvements
No matter what they say, never let callers in to your home without checking their ID. You can do this by telephoning the company they say they are from, use the number listed in your phone directory—Shut the door on them while you make the call.
Never feel embarrassed about asking for ID. Legitimate callers will not be offended. If you are suspicious or afraid shut the door and call 999.
Don't immediately agree to any offer or work without speaking to a family member, friend or seeking independent advice first.
What should you do if think you’ve been a victim of bogus tradesmen fraud? • Report it to Action Fraud - www.actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040 • You can report the salesperson to the Citizens Advice Bureau on 03454 04 05 06 or to your local Trading Standards Authority if you believe they have sold you faulty, inferior or overpriced products or services • Similarly, you can seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau about the terms and conditions of any agreement or contract you may have signed • If you’ve made the payment by credit/debit card or by cheque, contact your credit card company and/or bank and advise them that you’re a victim of improper door-to-door sales techniques and your identity or financial details may have been compromised—They’ll advise you on cancelling payments and ensuring your finances remain secure. Insp. P.Hatton
Good Ideas:
Make your area less of a
target by looking after
holidaying neighbours
homes—easy stuff like
free papers on show and
knowing who is around.
CRIME Stop Press:
Running Horses area—a
number of break-ins/
attempts on property/cars
Most burglary are for your
car keys—keep them out
of sight/reach.
How do burglars always seem
to find that unlocked door or
window? It’s not rocket
science—they just try lots of
handles until they get lucky
& the owners get hurt. Don’t
become a statistic—lock it, if
you’re not looking out of it.
Churchill Advice:
Get familiar with the new £5 note as fakes often appear too! Real one = smaller/plastic-paper and clear panel ‘Big Ben’ is gold on front but silver on rear, a hologram Five/Pounds & “£”/border, changes green to purple
+more. www.thenewfiver.co.uk
