• Greek Dark Ages (510 BC to 400 BC)• Archaic Greece (800BC to 480 BC)• Classical Greece (510 BC to 400 BC)• Hellenistic Greece (323 BC to 146 BC)• Roman Greece

Common house

During the ancient times, the average family lived in homes......

• Designed to keep cool in summer and warm in winter

• Made of stone, brick or wood • Open court yard• Two to three rooms

Wealthy houses

• Many rooms – bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, work rooms

• Special rooms – Slave room with little furniture– Gynaikon for women to weave, spin, meet

friends and take care of children

Family life

• Men got married at 25-30• Women got married at 12-16• Women did not go out alone• Women from poor families went out to get

water or work in the fields• Children work with father to learn to run the

farm or inherit the business

Marriage

Parents arranged marriages for their children

• Parents of the girl paid a dowry to the man she would marry

• Woman moved out of the house if divorced• Dowry would be returned if couples divorced

Gods of the Ancient Greece The Olympians: 1. Aphrodite- Goddess of love and beauty.1. Apollo- God of music, healing, plague, poetry, and archery. 2. Ares- God of war, bloodlust, violence, and civil order. 3. Artemis- Virgin goddess of a hunt, wilderness, wild animals,

childbirth and plague. 4. Demeter- Goddess of fertility, agriculture, horticulture, grain,

harvest. 5. Dionysus- God of wine, parties, festivals, madness, etc. 6. Hades- King of the Underworld7. Hera- Queen of marriage, kings, empires, women and childbirth. 8. Hermes- God of travel, messengers, trade, athletic, language,

writing and diplomacy.9. Hephaestus- Cripple god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry,

sculpture, and volcanism. 10. Hestia- Virgin goddess of hearth, home and cooking. 11. Persephone- Queen of the Underworld. 12. Poseidon- God of sea, rivers, drought, storms, floods,

earthquakes and horses.

The Titans

• They were called the “elder gods”• Gaia, or Earth, gave birth to seven Titans and seven

Titanesses• They were giants shaped like humans• They later overthrew their father, Uranus• Cronus became the new ruler • Most of the Titans were banished to Tartarus

Zeus• King of the Greek Gods• Ruler of Mount Olympus• God of weather, thunder, storm, sky, law and fate• Overthrew his father, Cronus • Married his sister, Hera and had many children

Clothing • Wear simple tunics made of fine wool or

linen• Men wear toga and wear a belt or girdle at

the waist • Women wear ankle length chitons • During cold winter, they both worer thick

cloaks called himations to keep warm

Art

• Enjoyed many forms of art, including theatre, acting, dancing, music and architecture

• Made theatre masks and costumes• Made musical instruments from trees and plants• Greek architects were great sound engineers
