Onthatsameday,twoofJesus’followersweregoingtoavillagenamedEmmaus,aboutsevenmilesfromJerusalem,andtheyweretalkingtoeachotheraboutallthethingsthathadhappened.Astheytalkedanddis-cussed,JesusHimselfdrewnearandwalkedalongwiththem;theysawHim,butsomehowdidnotrecognizeHim.

There’sacommonsaying,“Everyjourneybeginswithonestep.”Wecanalsosay,“Everyendeavor(orjour-ney)continueswithonemorestep.”Someoneoncesaidthat“greatworksareperformednotbystrength,butbyperseverance.”Canyouthinkoftimesinyourownlifewhenthishasbeentrue,whenyou’veaccomplishedataskorprojectsimplybecauseyourefusedtogiveupwhenitwouldhavebeenmucheasiertoquitthantocontinue?

Manytimeswhenlifeseemstobeanordealwecanmakeitintoanadventurebyourattitude,byhowweinspireotherstotake“onemorestep”towardreachingthegoalorfinishline.Everydaylifeholdstheriskofsidetrackingusfromwhatwesetouttoaccomplish.InScouting,per-severancemayinvolvedoingtherequirementstoreachthenextrank,stayingthecoursewhentheweatherturnsbad,orfinishingacompetitivegamewhenweknowwecannotcomeinfirstplace.WhatotherexamplescanyouthinkofinyourScoutingexperienceandinyourlife?Nomatterhowgreatthedistraction,wecanfinishthecourseifwestayfocusedandkeepgoingandgiveitourScoutingbest.GodwillhelpusdothatifwedailymakeanefforttoknowthatGodiswithus.Sometimesexpe-riencingthatthroughtheexamplesofourfriendsandleaders,evenmorethanthroughourownefforts,helpsuskeepfocusedonwhatistrulyimportant.

Thereoncewasahighschooltrackcoachwhowasnotoneofthosecoacheswhostandsonthesidelinesyellingandclockinghisrunners.Instead,heranwiththem,makingitdifficultforanytoslackofforfallbehindorjustplaindropoutevenwhentheywantedto.Whentheyleastexpectedit,therewasthecoachrunningrightalongbesidethem.Furthermorethiscoachdidn’tjustrunalongsidehishighschoolrunners.Hewantedtoengagetheminconversation.Nowit’shardenoughto

There’sastoryaboutparentswhowerehavingtroublegettingtheirchildinterestedingeography.TheythoughtthatiftheypurchasedapuzzleoftheUnitedStates,thepuzzlewouldsparkherinterest.And,totheiramaze-ment,theirchildwasabletoputtogetherthatpuzzleinnotimeatall.Theyaskedherhowshediditinsuchashorttime.SheexplainedthatonthebackofthemapwasapicturepuzzleofthefaceofGeorgeWashington.Shesaid,“Whenyougetthemanputtogetherright,theUnitedStatescomesoutallrighttoo.”Nowthat’sasignificantinsight.Becausethebestwaytoputthingstogetherastheyshouldbeinourcountry,intheworld,isforeachofustobe“puttogetherright.”

OneoftheScoutsnoticedsomething.Peoplewhowerewalkingintothesun,lowinthewesternsky,werewalk-ingwiththeirshadowsbehindthemwhilepeoplewalk-ingintheoppositedirection,awayfromthesun,werewalkingintotheirshadows.Itdidn’ttakehimverylongtomakeaconnectionbetweenwhathewasseeingandhisownfaithtradition.Manyfaithsusethecontrastbetweenlightanddarkasanimageofgoodandevil.Tobeinthelight,orwalkingtowardthelight,istobemovingtowardGod,whoisthesourceofallloveandgoodnessforusandforallGod’screation.Tobewalkingawayfromthelight,intoone’sshadow,canbecomparedtowalkingawayfromGod,awayfromallthatisgood,intothedarknessofseparationfromGod,fromothers,fromself,andevenfromGod’sowncreation,ofwhichweareapart.

Thechoiceisours,isn’tit?Weeithercanchoosetodothatwhichisgoodorthatwhichisbad,toliveclosetoGodorawayfromGodandfromoneanother.Whichchoiceshaveyoumadeinyourownlife?Whenhaveyoumadethem?WhenhaveyouchangeddirectionandmovedtowardGodandthelight?Howhaveyouhelpedafriend,perhapsaScoutofyourtrooporpatrol,tofindthedirectionthatleadstothelightofGod?ThenexttimeyouareoutsideonasunnydayobservewhereyourshadowisandmakethatareminderoftheteachingsofyourfaithtraditionaboutthepowerofGodandthepowerofevilandthechoiceswemake.

PURPOSE AND DESIgN IN gOD’S CREATION

God’sdesignofHiscreationisawonderfulmiracle.Thebeautyofnatureisinspiring.Asoftenasyoucan,spendatleastafewminutesadaytolookcloselyatsomepartofthenaturalworldaroundyou.GivethankstoGodforitsdesignanditsconnectiontoallotherlivingthings(andnonlivingtoo,suchasrockandearthandwaterandclouds).Youwillbeawedbywhatyouexperienceanddiscover.

Oneday,thewriterofthisreflectionwassittingquietlyinasunnylocationinFloridawhenhehappenedtocatchinhisvisionthetiniestofbrightlycoloredspidersdroppingonathreadofsilkfromatreebranch.Ashewatched,thisspiderswayedinthelightbreezeuntilhelandedonanotherlowerbranch.Itwasnotlongbeforeaframeworkforawebwasformedfromthreeorfoursturdysingleverticalstrandsplacedatsomedistancefromoneanother.Thentheworkofshapingthewebbeganinearnestandwasaccomplishedquitequickly.Aroundandaround,beginningfromtheoutsideandworkingtowardthecen-ter,thistinyspiderconnectedstrandsofitswebtogetherinanexquisitegeometricpattern,eachcircularstrandperfectlyseparatedfromthenextinanexactdesign.Finally,thespiderreachedtheverycenterandtookup

residence,waitingforanunsuspectinginsecttobecaughtinthenewlyconstructedwebtoprovidethefoodandnourishmentforthespider’slifeandspeciestocontinue.

EachpartofGod’screationisuniquelygiftedbyitsCreatorwithallitneedsforsurvivalandthecontinuanceofitsspecies.Thisisnolesstrueforyou.ThedifferenceisthatyouareawareofhowyouareusingGod’sgiftstoyou.Usethemwiselyandfortheirintendedpurposes,andyourlifewillbringequalglorytoGodasthattinylittlespiderinatreeinFloridadid.

Morethan17,000enthusiasticScoutsfrom108countriesoftheworldgatheredintheRockyMountainsofAlberta,Canada,fortheXVWorldJamboree.Thunderstormswithcoldrainthreatenedtheopeningceremoniesandarenashow.Justbeforetheeventsbegan,thecloudsparted,thesettingsunshonebrightly,andarainbowarchedacrosstheskyoverthesiteoftheJamboree.

RainbowsareoneofGod’strulyspectacularnaturalphenomena.Eventhoughweknowhownaturallytheyform,oftentheworldseemstocometoatemporaryhaltsowecanenjoythebeautyofthesecolorfulheavenlycreations.Onereasonforthissurelycomesfromthereli-gioustraditionthatGodsealedanewrelationshipwithhumanityandwithallGod’screationfollowingtheGreatFloodbythesignoftherainbowinthesky.

TherainbowhasbecomeareminderofGod’spresence,oftenareassuringmessage,asitwere,thatwhateverhasgonewrongwillbemadeOK.Storiesaretoldofhowdif-

ficultandstressfulsituationsthatseemtohavenoreso-lutionarecalmed,atleastforatime,bythesignoftherainbowintheheavens.Godispresent.Godiswalkingwithusthroughboththejoysandthesorrowsandthechallengesoflife.Weneednotbeafraid.Thenexttimeyouseearainbowinthesky,mayitbearemindertoyouofGod’scompanionshipwithyoueverystepofyourlife.Andgivethanks.

PraisebetoAllah!IrememberandglorifyHismanyattributesofpowerandmercy,andIaskhelpfromHim.WeseekrefugewithAllahfromtheevilswithinourselvesandfromthewickednessofourdeeds.ForonewhoisguidedbyAllah,thereisnonethatcanmisguidehim,andforonewhogetsastray(asaresultofAllah’sdisplea-sure),thereisnonetoguidehim.AndIbearwitness—truly,thereisnoGodbutAllah,Heistheonlyonewithnopartner.Undoubtedly,theexcellentteachingistheBook of Allah,theblessedandtheexalted.OnewhoseheartAllahhasadornedwithit,andbroughthimtothefoldofIslamafterhehasrenouncedtheworshipofmanygods(polytheism),andwhoadopteditinpreferencetoallothermessagesofthepeople,surelyheisthesuccess-fulandredeemed.Verily,itistheexcellentteachingandthemosteloquent.

LoveyouallthatislovedbyAllah.GettheloveofAllahimprintedinyourveryheart,anddon’tfeeltiredofrecit-ingAllah’swords,andrememberingHim,anddonotblackenyourhearts.ThisisbecausefromamongallthathasbeencreatedbyAllah,andlikedandchosenbyHim,andbestofallthegoodthings,aswellasfromamongthelawfulandunlawful,andthegoodformsofworship,HehasassignedsuperioritytoHisownwords.

AndHehasputlovebetweentheirhearts.Notifyouhadspentallthatisintheearth,couldyouhaveproducedthataffection,butAllahhasdoneit,forHeisexaltedinmight,wise.(Qur’an8:63)

Corruptionhasappearedoverlandandwateronaccountofwhatman’shandshavewrought.(Qur’an30:40)

Don’tyouseethatitisAllahwhohascreatedtheheav-ensandtheearth,notwithoutaplanandpurpose?Hecan,ifHesowills,removeyouandputinyourplaceanewpeople.ThatwillnotbesodifficultforGodtodo.(Qur’an14:19–20)
