SUBJECT:- NOWRUZ NOMINATION FILE 2016

Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) is an autonomous organization of

the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting & National Heritage. PNCA is an apex cultural

body established for patronage, promotion and development of arts. It advises Federal

Government on matters of policy on artistic activities and their implementation. One of its

key functions is to coordinate. evaluate and facilitate the cultural organizations and

individuals engaged in cultural act ivities.

It is indeed a privilege for Pakistan to be pmi of 'Nowruz' Multi­

National Nomination tor UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Representative List

along with Iran. Iraq. India, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan. Tajikistan. Kazakhstan,

Turkey. Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan.

In Pakistan. Nowruz is celebrated with traditional enthusiasm in

Karachi, Quetta. Peshawar Gilgit-Baltistan (former Northern Areas), Multan and Kashmir.

The . 0\\TUZ festivities to name a ihv includes: Clcaning!Decoration of Homes. Visits to

Family/Friends. Polo Matches. Yak Polo. Daa-daa. Jumping over Fire to Cleanse Sins.

Exchange of Colorcd Eggs. Singing/ Dancing. Special Food/Dishes and so on .

. ·o\\TUZ is a 'cultural bridge' between various communities of Pakistan

and provides a platform tor pluralism. Nowruz gives a message of peace and tolerance in

society by providing an opportunity tor rethinking. reviving and rejuvenating the cultural

ethos of the communities associated vvith it and also catalvse harmonv in the over all .r •

civilizational ambiance. Moreover it promotes diversity as a unity and serves a foundation

for a more peaceful and evolving world.
