RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Historical sketch of Indian Bodybuilding
DALIP SINGH RANA
Dalip Singh Rana (born 27 August 1972) better known by his ring name
The Great Khali, is an Indian professional wrestler, actor, and former powerlifter
who won Mr. India in 1995 and 1996. He is currently signed to World Wrestling
Entertainment (WWE) on its raw brand. Before embarking on his professional
wrestling career, he was a police officer in the Punjab state police. In WWE, Singh
is a one-time World Heavyweight Champion, and one-time Slammy Award
winner. He has also appeared in three Hollywood films as well as two Bollywood
films. Under the ring name Giant Singh, Dalip Singh first became a professional
wrestler for All Pro Wrestling (APW) in the United States, making his first
appearance in October 2000, when teaming with Tony Jones against the West Side
Playaz.
New Japan Pro Wrestling (2001–2002)
In August 2001, Singh was brought into New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW)
by Team 2000 leader, Masahiro Chono, as Giant Singh, along with another big
man, Giant Silva. They were the tallest tag team in professional wrestling history
at an average height of 7 foot 2½ inches, and a combined weight of 805 pounds.
The two teamed up for the first time at the Tokyo Dome in October, labeled Club
7 by Chono, and defeated Yutaka Yoshie, Kenzo Suzuki, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and
Wataru Inoue in a Handicap Match when Silva pinned Tanahashi and Inoue at the
same time. Singh suffered his first loss in a tag match in January 2002 after
Hiroyoshi Tenzan pinned him with a cradle. He suffered another big tag defeat
48
during March, being pinned by Manabu Nakanishi after a German suplex pin. His
most critical loss came in August at Tokyo Nippon Budokan when, after a falling
out, he was pinned by Silva in a singles match. World Wrestling Entertainment
(2006–present)
On 2 January 2006, Singh became the first Indian professional wrestler to
be signed to a contract by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE); he was
assigned to their developmental federation, Deep South Wrestling,[1]
where he
wrestled under his real name.
Feud with The Undertaker (2006)
With Daivari as his manager, the unnamed Singh debuted on WWE
television on the 7 April 2006 episode of SmackDown!, attacking The Undertaker
and leaving defenseless during his match with Mark Henry, and thus causing a no-
contest. The next week he was introduced as The Great Khali. Daivari explained
that he now finally had a client that would destroy The Undertaker (after
Muhammed Hassan and Mark Henry had previously failed). Khali made his in-
ring debut on the April 21 edition of SmackDown!, defeating Funaki.
On the May 12 edition of SmackDown!, Khali was John "Bradshaw"
Layfield hand-picked opponent against World Heavyweight Champion Rey
Mysterio. Khali had a height advantage of two feet and a weight advantage of 250
pounds, and defeated Mysterio in a squash match. In his match against The
Undertaker at Judgment Day, Khali defeated The Undertaker with a kick to the
head after receiving some illegal help from Daivari. Khali continued on a rampage
for several weeks, winning handicap matches,[19]
beating superstars up in a display
of power, and mocking The Undertaker's signature pin and victory pose.
49
Khali then challenged The Undertaker to a Punjabi Prison match at The Great
American Bash. However, Khali was not medically cleared to compete in the
match, and was instead replaced by Big Show, who would end up losing to The
Undertaker despite interference from Khali. After he was medically cleared, Khali
would be challenged by The Undertaker to a Last Man Standing match at
SummerSlam.[24]
The match was moved to the SmackDown! just prior to
SummerSlam and was won by The Undertaker, giving Khali his first definite loss
in WWE.
ECW (2006)
Daivari and The Great Khali were moved to the ECW brand officially when
they made their ECW debuts on the 31 October 2006 edition of ECW on Sci Fi.
Daivari beat "The Reject" Shannon Moore in a very quick match. Daivari's
original theme music was used as well as his Persian rants on the microphone.
Afterwards, Moore was manhandled by The Great Khali. Daivari continued his
ECW winning streak over the next several weeks with The Great Khali usually
following up the contest with a chokebomb on Daivari's opponent. At December
to Dismember, Daivari got a victory over Tommy Dreamer following a roll-up.
Dreamer then chased Daivari backstage; The Great Khali appeared and caught
Dreamer, planting him on the steel ramp with a chokebomb.
Raw (2007)
On the January 8 episode of Raw, Jonathan Coachman announced that
Khali had signed with Raw (without his manager Daivari), and would wrestle John
Cena in the main event. Khali won by disqualification after Cena took a steel chair
held by Armando Estrada and hit Khali with it. After the match, Khali
chokeslammed Cena to the mat and left the ringside area, leaving Cena prone to an
attack by Umaga.
50
On the February 19 edition of Raw, Khali demanded better competition
after easily defeating The Highlanders. Four days later on SmackDown!, Khali
interfered in a Falls Count Anywhere Money In The Bank qualifying match
between Kane and King Booker. Khali cost Kane the match, leading to a feud
which would culminate with a match at WrestleMania 23. In his first appearance
at WrestleMania, Khali defeated Kane at WrestleMania 23 after slamming him
with the Khali Bomb. Right after the match, Khali choked Kane with a hook and
chain.
On the April 30 edition of Raw, Khali attacked Shawn Michaels, Edge, and
Randy Orton (all three top contenders to the WWE Championship at the time)
backstage. He then attacked WWE Champion John Cena as well, sending a
message that he wanted Cena's title. The next week on Raw, Khali defeated
Michaels in a No. 1 contender's match for the WWE Championship at Judgment
Day.[33][34]
At the event, Khali lost via submission for the first time ever, tapping
out to John Cena's STFU. However, at Judgment Day, Khali's foot was under the
rope when he tapped out, which went unnoticed by the referee. The next night on
Raw, Khali expressed his outrage over the outcome via his newly established
translator and manager, Ranjin Singh. At One Night Stand, Khali lost to John
Cena after he was FU'd off a crane bed. This would be the first time that The Great
Khali had ever been pinned in a singles match.
Return to Smackdown!, and World Heavyweight Title Reign (2007–2008)
On the June 11 edition of Raw, as part of the 2007 WWE Draft, Khali was drafted
from Raw to SmackDown! as SmackDown!'s first draft pick. He would soon enter
a feud with Dave Batista in July. The two were scheduled for a match at The Great
American Bash, however, because Edge vacated the World Heavyweight
Championship due to an injury, a twenty man Battle Royal was held for the title
on the July 20 edition of SmackDown!. Khali won after eliminating both Kane and
51
Batista in one move, winning his first World Heavyweight Championship. Khali
dominated and defeated both Batista and Kane in a Triple Threat match that same
week at The Great American Bash. Khali then debuted a new finisher called the
"Khali Vise Grip" which he used to wear down Ric Flair, Batista, and Kane. At
SummerSlam, Khali lost by disqualification when he used steel chair but retained
the title.
Khali then began a feud with Rey Mysterio after Mysterio won a
"Championship Competition" making Mysterio the No. 1 contender. On the
September 7 edition of SmackDown!, after Mysterio defeated Chavo Guerrero in
an "I Quit" match, Khali applied his Vice Grip on Mysterio until Batista came to
the rescue. After the assault, General Manager Theodore Long informed Khali that
he would be defending his World Heavyweight Championship against both Rey
Mysterio and Batista in a Triple Threat Match at Unforgiven, which Khali lost to
Batista after receiving a spinebuster. Khali challenged Batista to a rematch in a
Punjabi Prison Match at No Mercy in which Khali lost by failing to escape the
Punjabi Prison before Batista.
In late 2007 and early 2008, Khali was put in a program with Finlay usually
trying to assault Hornswoggle but with Finlay stopping him. Khali participated in
a Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out, which was won by The Undertaker.
At WrestleMania XXIV, Khali participated in a twenty-four man battle royal in
which the winner would receive a title match against the ECW Champion Chavo
Guerrero later that evening. Kane won the battle royal and went on to win the title.
Khali then began a short feud with Big Show. The feud culminated with a match at
Backlash where Big Show emerged victorious.
In July, Khali feuded with Triple H over his WWE Championship. On the
July 25 edition of SmackDown!, Khali won a battle royal also involving Big Show,
52
Jeff Hardy, Mr. Kennedy, Umaga and Montel Vontavious Porter, to earn the right
to face Triple H at SummerSlam. At the event, Khali lost to Triple H after
receiving a Pedigree. Khali was given another opportunity to win the WWE
Championship, when he faced Jeff Hardy to gain entry into the Championship
Scramble at Unforgiven. Triple H interfered in the Scramble qualification match,
and aided Jeff Hardy with a chair shot to Khali, helping Hardy win and
eliminating Khali from title contention.
Face turn (2008–present)
On October 3, daredevil Johnny Knoxville aired a segment on
www.jackassworld.com interviewing Khali with his translator. When Knoxville
asked about Khali's "taliwacker" Khali was upset and threatened to tip the
interview table onto Knoxville. Khali later invited Knoxville to attend the October
13 episode of Raw, where Knoxville was attacked by both Khali and WWE Diva
Beth Phoenix.
Khali grew to take on a more "fun" persona; he and Ranjin Singh began
hosting the weekly "Khali Kiss Cam", where Singh would summon ostensibly
random women from the audience to kiss Khali.
The Great Khali feuded with Dolph Ziggler, winning by disqualification
after Ziggler attacked him with a steel chair. In the next few weeks, Khali lost to
Ziggler by countout and disqualification after Ziggler made it look like Khali hit
him with a steel chair. At The Bash, Khali lost to Ziggler by pinfall, after Kane
returned and attacked Khali. Shortly there after, it was revealed that, in the context
of a storyline, Ranjin Singh is Khali's (kayfabe) brother. The feud with Kane
resulted in a match at SummerSlam, where Kane defeated Khali after Kane used
Singh as a distraction, and performed a running DDT to Khali. Then Khali lost to
Kane again at the first ever WWE Breaking Point event.[48]
53
Khali required knee surgery, so Kane "assaulted" Khali with the ring steps during
a match so Khali could have time off.[49]
Whilst injured, Khali made a surprise
appearance alongside Ranjin Singh, Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon on the
November 2 edition of Raw, as a judge for the "Raw's Got Talent" segment. He
made his official return on the December 14th edition of Raw teaming with Kane
and Christian to defeat William Regal, Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Kozlov.
On the April 2 edition on SmackDown he announced that he would be out
of wrestling for an undefined amount of time as he needed to spend time with his
family and regroup his thoughts back in India. On the April 19 edition on Raw, he
made an appearance by teaming up with special guest host MacGruber in a 2-on-1
handicap match against Vladimir Kozlov as "Khaluber" (Khali dressed as
MacGruber) which they won by intentional count-out.
As part of the 2010 WWE Supplemental Draft, Khali and Ranjin Singh
were both drafted back to the Raw brand. After returning from his hiatus the
previous month, Khali was announced by John Cena to be a part of his team along
with John Morrison, Chris Jericho, Edge, R-Truth and Bret Hart to face The Nexus
at Summer Slam. On the August 9th edition of Raw however, Khali was assaulted
and injured by The Nexus, thus removing him from the match.[50]

India reclaims Mr. Universe after 21 years.
Mr. Universe 2009 is Mahadev Deka From India.
60
A Reason to be Proud Again and the reason is none other than the man with
Big Heart Mahadev Deka from Guwahati Assam who made the event count after
21 long years.
Mahadev Deka has won the Mr Universe 2009 title in the bantam weight
category at the 2009 Musclemania Superbody world championship held at Florida
from June 18-21. Mahadev really deserves a great respect and honor since he is
the reason for millions to get inspired. 40 years old Mahadev went through a major
heart surgery in 2002, but everything got faded out before his will. The man who
never allowed his odds to dominate him and kept alive his passion for
Bodybuilding. He has added himself to the history of limited Indians who made
their Nation Proud by holding the Mr.Universe earlier. He is now into the club of
Legends such as Sri. Manotosh Ray (Mr.Universe 1951), Sri. Manohar Aich
(Mr.Universe 1952), Sri. Premchand Degra (Mr.Universe 1988) and now its none
other than Mahadev himself (Mr.Universe 2009).
Throughout the various ages of India's history there has been a growth of
interest in Physical Culture. As far back as the 1100s there were detailed
descriptions of diet, training & lifestyle for the more famous proponents.
Weightlifting was achieved using stone and sacks of sand. Press-ups and squats
were common exercises. By the 1500s Bodybuilding had become a national
passion. It is often considered that the British Rule in India started a period of
decline in Physical Culture and general health amongst the Indian population.
In 1905 there was a revival of interest, mainly in strand pulling. This was
due to a great extent to Sandow's highly successful visit to India in 1904. Muscle
Control was introduced to India in the 1920s by Chit Tun, a Burmese man who
settled in Calcutta. Despite the influence of Sandow and others 'Western' style
bodybuilding did not take off in a big way until the 1930s. The most important
61
instructor at that time being Prof. K.V. Iyer who founded the Hercules
Gymnasium in Bangalore. He also started India's first postal course in
Bodybuilding. B.C. Ghosh credits Chit Tun with inspiring him to take up Muscle
Control and he and his partner K.C. Sen Gupta opened a Gymnasium in Calcutta
in the 1930s. Ghosh & Sengupta were credited with the early training of both
Monotosh Roy and Monohar Aich, both World Class bodybuilders in the 50s.
May be the world today does not know much about Indian Bodybuilders,
but the fact is that India has been the base of bodybuilding since thousands of
years. India has its history of bodybuilding touching thousand of years. The
saddest part is that today, India is not that ahead in the department, yet many of
Indian Bodybuilders have proved their presence in the Race. India has so far
produced three Mr.Universes, Sri. Monotosh Roy (1951- Winner Class 3), Sri.
Monohar Aich (1952 - Winner Short Men Catagory) also known by the name of
Pocket Hercules and the unforgettable Sri. Premchand Degra (1985). These names
are just the examples of what India has within its resources and what India can
produce if right path is shown.
62
Never the less India has produced several big names who may not be
known by everyone in the world but are legends of their abilities. Some of the
names include Sri Sunil Kumar Patro (Mr. Asia - Runner up) and 12 times Mr.
India and winner of the greatest sports honor of Arjun Award. Currently he is
settled in Rourkela (Orissa) and is running a gym (Modern Health Club) which has
produced several national level bodybuilders. He is called by the name of DADA
and is one of the most respected person of the place.
Monotosh Roy
Born 1917 in Gajaria in Dacca district of India.
Roy started exercising at 12 and entered his first competition in 1939.
In1942 he won the East Indian Bodybuilding Championship and in 1947 won the
All India competition. He was an early pupil of B.C. Ghosh. In 1951 he won the
Mr. Universe (Class 3-short men division) competition. He later taught at Calcutta
University, Law College and played an important role in the development of the
63
IFBB in India and was credited as being the Founder Member. In his later years he
gave up Physical Culture and became bed-ridden. He died at the age of 88 of
Cardiac Arrest in a Nursing Home in Kolkata, leaving behind three sons and a
daughter.
Living Legend Sri Monohor Aich :-
Manohar Aich, (born 1912) is an Indian bodybuilder. He won the 1952 Mr
Universe championship. He is also three-time Asian Games gold medalist in body
building. Being only 5' tall, he was given the name "Pocket Hercules". He
currently lives near Kolkata and has retained an excellent physique even at the age
of 97 years. His chest measured 54 inches with a waist of 23 inches giving him the
best v-cut. Aich continues to train for 90 minutes at his own gym Studio de
Physique in Kolkata which has produced Indian champs like Satyen Das, Satya
Pal and Hitesh Chatterjee. Aich's diet: dal, bhaat, curry and maach (fish).

EMPIRICAL FINDINGS OF THE STUDY
The empirical findings of the study show that there is a lack of favorable
government support to promote the performance of bodybuilders at international
level as well as also at national level. A large portion of respondents gave the
responses in opposite to the government policies and programs for bodybuilders.
The Indian bodybuilders are lacking proper diet according to most of the
respondents. They told that there are fewer benefits in government jobs for
bodybuilders. So the sportspersons are finding no bright future in bodybuilding
and so they are avoiding going in the area of bodybuilding. And those who have
already chosen bodybuilding are having low motivation for performance. There
are few incentive schemes for the bodybuilders in India. Mostly respondents did
not know much about the incentive schemes of government for bodybuilders. The
respondents gave suggestion for providing proper diet, increased daily allowances,
76
weightage in government jobs, promotion benefits, opening new gyms, and many
others.
In conclusion it can be said that there is need to improve it policies and
programs by government. It should provide basic facilities and requirements to the
bodybuilders also like other games. It should provide employment to the
bodybuilders who achieve greater positions in the international and national level.
The Indian bodybuilding will be known at world level only if the government had
take care.
There were two subtests in the questionnaire i.e. General Opinion test and
Specific Opinion test. In the general opinion test, there were questions regarding
general views of the respondents regarding bodybuilding game. There were five
dimensions on which the views were taken i.e. knowledge, effectiveness,
suggestion, world participation, and hope. The second subtest was containing
views about reasons of miserable condition of Indian bodybuilding at world level.

The detailed findings of the study are as follows:
The first hypothesis of the present research was “The nation has failed to
create a proper social environment conducive to the desired level for excellence in
the international competitions”. After seeing the results, this hypothesis found to
be proved as 72% of the respondents noted lack of social support as a reason of the
miserable condition of the sports. While only 23% respondents given views in
opposite to this notion. Where as 5% of the respondents did not know this thing. In
this way it can be said that the lack of social support is one major reason for
miserable condition of the Indian bodybuilding at world level.
As the second hypothesis of the study was “There is no respectable place
for India at the international Body-Building contests” and this is also been proved
because 59% of the respondents given their views that there is no respectable
position of Indian bodybuilding at world level. Total 35.5% respondents were not
having such views while 5.50% respondents were not known about this. This can
be said that there is no such respectable place of Indian bodybuilding at world
level.
The third hypothesis was also proved which one was “There are low
development of infrastructure, technique, training and administrative apparatus to
bring about excellence in the area of Body-Builders in India”. A large portion of
the respondents given views that there is lack of support by government in terms
of infrastructure, technique, training and apparatus because 82% of the
respondents noticed this thing while 10% were not in favor of this notion and 8%
did not disclosed their views. In this way it can be concluded that lack of
governmental support is one of the major reasons for miserable condition of Indian
bodybuilding at world level.
The fourth hypothesis has also been supported by the findings of the
present study. The hypothesis was “Paucity of funds, incentives, scheme and
86
policies of government and other institution towards promotion of Body-Building
in India”. After seeing results it is found that only 35.33% of the respondents
justified the effectiveness of the funds, incentives, schemes, and policies are
sufficient. Whereas 59.67% respondents were not in favor of these and 5%
respondents did not disclosed views about this. On the other side, 82% of the
respondents noticed ineffective policies as a reason of miserable condition of
Indian bodybuilding while 12% respondents were in opposite to this and 6% did
not disclosed their views.
As discussing the other findings of the study, it was found that 50% of the
respondents were having knowledge about all governmental and other institutional
schemes and policies for development of bodybuilding in India. Where as 50% of
respondents showed ignorance about schemes and policies for bodybuilders. 85
percent of respondents suggested making changes in these schemes and policies
while 10.50% respondents given no suggestions and 4.50% did not disclosed their
views.
The respondents were having hope about improved schemes and polices by
government to develop Indian bodybuilding game. A total 57.40% of respondents
were found hopeful but 35.60% were not hopeful that government would improve
the schemes and policies and 7% respondents did not disclose their opinion about
this.
While discussing reasons of miserable condition of Indian bodybuilding,
corruption, personal reasons, partiality, financial reasons, and ignoring the talent
are major reasons responsible for miserable condition of Indian bodybuilding.
Corruption is a major factor noticed by 71% of respondents whereas ignored by
25% respondents. A number of 4% respondents did not say anything in this
regard. Personal reasons found not noticed by the respondents as obstacles in the
way of performance of bodybuilders. Because only 35% respondents noticed so
87
and 60% of respondents not accepted this thing and 5% did not disclosed views
about this.
Partiality in game was another reason of declined performance in game
noticed by 68% of respondents while it was opposed by 18% of respondents and
14% did not open their views. This is not good to found such a thing in games
where the performance is to be favored. But due to partiality, the performers are
being ignored and less talented persons are being included in the games. That‟s
why the standard of the game is declining.
Financial reasons are other most common factors which are creating
obstacles in good performance of the game. As a result 52% of respondents
accepted financial reasons as obstacles in the way of Indian bodybuilders whereas
42% respondents did not notice this thing and 6% did not open their views. One
another factor of miserable condition of Indian bodybuilding is ignoring the talent
in the game. A total of 50% respondents noticed this thing as a reason for
miserable condition of bodybuilding at world level while 30% respondents did not
accept this thing as a cause and 20% did not disclose their views.
As concluding, it can be said that there is lack of favorable governmental as
well as social support for development of bodybuilding. The schemes and policies
made by government and other institutions are not proving good to improve the
condition of bodybuilding. That‟s why Indian participation in world level
championships is not good. The respondents gave their suggestions for better
results of bodybuilding participation in world level. These include increase the
funds, other facilities, provide the benefits of reservation in jobs for bodybuilders,
promotion benefits, provide more infrastructure, include modern technologies,
conduct new researches to improve the techniques etc. Government should make
more effective policies to improve bodybuilding game. Government should also
provide financial support to the bodybuilders of low Socio Economic Status
88
background because there is requirement of spending money on expensive
supplements, diets, modern technology apparatuses, and other expenses. Society
should also take interest in bodybuilding game like cricket, volleyball, football,
kabaddi, tennis, badminton etc. games. Except including the above mentioned
changes, there is need to remove corruption in the game management as well as
there should be no place for partiality in the game. The talented sportspersons
should be given weight age in the game. There should be fair decisions.
