JOHN PIRIE INVOLVED IN GLOBAL TRAINING During mid-February our teachers and many ancillary staff attended a full day of professional learning with facilitators from Brisbane and Melbourne. The course is based on Professor John Hattie’s (perhaps the most notable educational researcher of the last decade) work which has led to the identification of learning conditions and teaching approaches which have most impact on student learning. We understand that almost all strategies make a difference to learning outcomes but this research identifies factors that have most impact and can deliver more than a year’s learning growth in a 12 month period.
Professor Hattie was involved with the recent ABC documentary entitled Revolution School and his high impact learning work certainly delivered significant improvement in that context. The course our school and other public schools and preschools in Port Pire have committed to run over three years promises to deliver changes in teaching approaches, how learners engage with the challenge of mastering new learning and the culture we promote.
The timing is excellent. In recent years we have seen a substantial change in our student body. They exhibit the qualities of respect, responsibilty, confidence and persistence to a higher degree than we saw 2, 4 & 6 years ago. Now is a great time to push them harder, to expect more and to engage with strategies that make them more powerful and effective learners. This work is curently being delivered to over 200,000 teachers globally but our school and our local partners are among the first to adopt it in South Australia. The potential to grow our organization further is immense.

Hazard Alert
An incident/accident has occurred recently at 2 sites resulting in
injuries to students.
In one incident the student was using the junior primary play
equipment and caught the hat that they were wearing in play
equipment, resulting in a red welt on the child’s throat due to
friction/burn.
The style of hat is our current school hat with an adjustable chin
cord.
As this incident identifies a risk of injury we request the
following:
you inspect your child’s school hat and if it has a cord,
please immediately remove the cord; and
if you have concerns about the safety of the hat please
speak with me or office staff.
The school will suspend further sales of this style of hat and seek
further safety advice. Given this we are currently working to
provide an alternative style of hat.
The safety of students at this site is of utmost importance, as
such our school staff will continue to monitor and assess
potential risks. When required we will modify or change
processes to ensure our students get the best care.

Student Movement
Lateness
When a student is late for school, they are required to report to
Student Services to sign in for the day. A note explaining lateness
should be included in the student’s diary.
Students Signing Out
Students may sign out of the school for urgent or important
business that is not able to be conducted outside of school
hours. Such reasons may include:
- medical appointments
- meetings with agencies (eg. yourtown, CAMHS, UCW etc)
Parents/Caregivers must write a note in the diary requesting
permission for a student to sign out.
The diary note must be presented to the care group or subject
teacher to be counter signed.
At the time of their departure the student reports to Student
Services to be signed out. They will receive an exit slip and
should carry this to verify permission to leave the school.
When returning to school the student must sign back in through
Student Services.
Illness During the School Day
Students feeling ill or in need of first aid should report to the
Student Services area where a School Services Officer, trained in
First Aid, will attend to them.
Parents will be contacted to collect students if it is not
appropriate for them to return to class. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT
LEAVE SCHOOL WITHOUT PERMISSION or TELEPHONE HOME
THEMSELVES BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT WELL.
Soccer Uniforms
If your child played Soccer for the school last season and has
their uniform, please return to Student Services ASAP.
Crows Visit JPSS
On Monday, February 25, five
players from the Adelaide
Crows Kyle Cheney, Jake
Lever, Jake Kelly, Rory Atkins
and Alex Keath visited our
school. In the first session
students in years 10-12
participated in a question and answer session with the players.
Students had the
opportunity to write down a
question to ask the players
with questions ranging from
‘What is your favourite thing
about playing for the
Adelaide Crows?’ to ‘What
are your current and future goals both personally and in the
game?’ The players shared with the group how important it is to
set goals and do your best
at school so that your
options are always open
both in sport and in life. Kyle
Cheney, a previous
Hawthorn Hawks player and
now backman for the Crows
told students that it was
important to enjoy their sport and give it their all.
The second session saw approximately 60 year 8 and 9 students
involved in a variety of
skill sessions working
on their tackling, goal
kicking, handballing
and marking. Students
had the opportunity to
try a bit of everything
and gain some valuable feedback from the players.

At the end of both
sessions the players
were kind enough to
have photos with
students and sign
various items before
heading to Port
Augusta for their community camp. Overall we were extremely
lucky to have such a great group of players and role models for
our students to enjoy. The students should be commended on
their behaviour and effort throughout the visit with writing
questions and taking part in the skills sessions.

Middle and Senior School Information Night
On Wednesday 15
February the Year 8
team along with the
Senior School team
held their annual
BBQ and
Information
Evening. This
evening provides
opportunities to build and develop relationships between the
school and families. This year saw a larger number of families
attending than in the past.
The evening started
with both groups
together, enjoying a
sausage or two.
Families and school
staff had informal
conversations about
how students have
settled into year 8
and senior school parents discussed curriculum and senior school
expectations.
After dinner, the Senior School Team went up to the newly
renovated study room to talk about SACE requirements and a
number of implementations that the school are making to
further enhance our students’ academic success.
The Middle School Team went to the refurbished 80’s block to
discuss school expectations and the importance of the
communication between home and school, something that can
assist greatly with students learning progress. This time also
allowed parents to ask questions about school processes and
how they can best support their children.
It was a very successful event and we thank all parents, students
and staff for attending the evening.

Mathletics
All students in Year 8, 9 and 10 are able to be a part of the online
Maths website, Mathletics. Year 8 and 9 students are
encouraged to access Mathletics at least once per week.
Students accumulate 10 points for every correct answer to a
curriculum question and one point for correct answers for
Mathletics Live questions. Students who achieve 1000 points per
week will receive a bronze certificate; after 5 bronze certificates
have been earned a silver certificate is awarded. With 4 silver
certificates, a student then receives a gold certificate. Students
can access Mathletics from home to continue to improve their
maths and numeracy skills and compete in head-to-head
arithmetic battles against students from all around the world, by
using their Mathletics login and password to access the site

the school and tried their best. A big thankyou to Mary Nitz for
organising the boys and timekeeping on the day as well as the

Soccer Excellence Academy
John Pirie Secondary
School has
introduced a Year 8/9
Soccer Excellence
Academy in 2017 and
it has made a positive
start. This new
initiative is designed
to develop
knowledgeable and competent players who are able to
demonstrate efficiency in the technical fundamentals of the
game. It offers both boys and girls an opportunity to pursue a
comprehensive study of soccer by imparting a high level of
expertise in theoretical knowledge, technique and skills, fitness
and game awareness.
For the first half of Term 1, students have been focusing on
improving their core soccer skills – first touch, running with the
ball, striking the ball and 1 v 1. In addition, students have
completed an online ‘Laws of the Game’ course and a Level 4
Junior Referee course. These courses have provided students
with the accreditation to be a qualified referee.
In the coming weeks, the JPSS Academy team play against the
Northern Demons junior soccer teams. All students involved look
forward to the challenge! Students will also undertake a
coaching course which enables them to coach/train 5-9 year old
players. Some exciting opportunities for all students involved.
We would like to acknowledge and thank Intersport Port Pirie,
Home Hardware, Hon Geoff Brock MP and Automatic Print for
their sponsorship and contribution towards this new initiative.
If you would like to find out more information about the
academy, please contact Ben Howard on 8632 0400 or
alternatively, email Ben.Howard505@schools.sa.edu.au.
