• Review lesson on the Dominican Republic– Including the US

Involvement in the war for independence with Haiti

Day One: Entrance Ticket

• Write three historical facts about the Dominican Republic?

• Begin with an opening discussion reviewing yesterday's historical lesson about the Dominican Republic: Did the US have a right to get involved in the Dominican Republic's war for independence against Haiti?

Day One: Annexation

• What is annexation?

• The incorporation of some territory into another geo-political entity.

• In 1871, President Grant wanted to annex Santo Domingo.

• In 1871, why would it be important for President Grant to try and annex Santo Domingo? (Why would the US want this?)

• Give the students small pieces of paper.

• Have them answer/predict this question

• Turn in papers and watch the film on Grant

• While students are watching, look for “good” answers

• Why were American leaders interested in moving freed slaves out of the continental United States?

• Why were places such as Liberia and Santo Domingo chosen as possible relocation spots?

• What caused American leaders to change their views so that today segregation is considered wrong?
