Reef
The Great Barrier ReefThe Great Barrier Reef is a region within
Queensland that contains the largest coral reef in the world – Coral Reef: An underwater structure made up
of colonies of tiny marine animals. It stretches from the most northerly point of
the East Coast until Gladstone, Queensland (above Brisbane)
1.5 million tourists come to this region to relax on the white sandy beaches, snorkel, surf, or sail every year.
Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981
Reef tourism has increased tremendously over the years; analysts suggest this is because of two factors:
Faster catamarans so it doesn’t take as long to get there;
They have introduced many different ways to experience the reef in order to appeal to a broader range of visitors – snorkel, scuba, and glass-bottom viewing.
