History

• In 1799 a twelve year old boy named Conrad Reed went fishing that day and found a 17 lb gold nugget and he brought it to his house. They used it as a doorstop for three years. Then his father sold it for $3.60. Later he discovered that the gold was worth $3600.00.

• In 1803 Conrad’s father set up a mining place. After he did that a slave named Peter found a 28 lb gold nugget. In 1831 he started underground mining. Conrad’s father died in 1845. The Civil War caused less people to mine there.
