NCJH Girls Basketball vs Eldorado by Coach Toby Kramer

NCHS Girls Basketball - Iraan

TournamentBy Coach Brandy Sweeten During the Christmas Break the Prowling Panthers rolled their sleeves up for more action out West as they headed with numerous devoted and appreciated parents for a return trip to Iraan for the Alley Hoop Classic The young squad hoped to gel early and shake the Christmas rust Their first round was against Alpine and NC would have to be patient in finding their form Still the Panthers captured the early lead with stingy defense

and a persistence to go inside Paulette Williams began taking over in the second quarter and helped carry her team to the finish with 28 big ones Abbey Falcon assisted with a solid 8 points followed by Kyra Sifuentes with 7 reserve post Nikki Milliorn chipped in 3 points and Nevah Navarro sank 2 points At the end of four NC put their first holiday victory under their belts with a 48 - 25 win Next up for the Panthers were the Prowlers of Ft Stockton NC jumped out to the early lead but the Prowlers gained a 10 - 8 advantage at the end of one NC Blue regrouped in the second fueled

by Sifuentes hitting 3 of her 6 bombs from downtown to finish with 19 on the evening and Williams dominating in the paint to lead all scorers with 21 points Rounding out the scoring for the Canyon was Falcon with 6 followed by Navarro with 3 Milliorn chipped in a bucket and JV star Ashley Harmon showed touch at the line for 1 Though the Panthers could never quite pull away they showed much

character in persevering with a young cast to hold out for the 52 - 41 victory and a date with 2-A Stanton for the Finals In the Finals after only half of a quarter of pressing NC was forced to abandon their game for a half-court contest and retire their leader Williams to the bench with three fouls Freshmen upstarts Milliorn Harmon and JV point guard Siera Edwards showed much poise in holding down the ship At the end of the first half the Panthers found themselves only down by four 15 - 19 In the third Big Blue came to life out scoring Stanton 12 - 4 with some promising half-court defensive stops The

Panthers lead for most of the fourth However in the waning seconds NC allowed Stanton to sneak in a lay-up that shot proved to be the dagger in the heart NC let a bittersweet one pass them by 36 - 37 Scoring for NC were Williams lead all scorers with 18 Falcon chipped in 9 Sifuentes finished with 7 and Danielle Irwin netted 2 In spite of the Panthers settling for silver the experience was well-worth the miles and they came home with team and individual hardware Paulette Williams and Kyra Sifuentes were both named to the All-Tournament Team

The Prowling Panthers have been on a Holiday Basketball Extravaganza They wound down the fall semester by hosting Junction right before the break on December 17th The JV opened play first with some aggressive full-court defense and strong play from the paint NC held their opponent to just 11 points while racking up 34 of their own showing just how much the Panthers have improved

Ashley Harmon lead all scorers with 16 points followed by Priscilla Gonzales April Amine and Siera Edwards all with 4 points Ariel Lara chipped in two in a row from the charity stripe and Malerie Gomez rounded out the action with a bucket The JV will hope to regroup from the long break when they return to square off with Medina just in time for district play this Friday Next up for the girls

was the Varsity NC made a strong statement to cinch a three-game winning streak with the Eagles right from the get-go The Panthers jumped out to a commanding 24 - 3 first-quarter lead and never looked back The second quarter was more of the same with NC topping their performance at 25 points using balanced scoring and transition buckets Every player got in on the action showing just what they could

do when all cylinders were firing Kyra Sifuentes lead all scorers busting 5 three pointers on her way to finishing with 21 points on limited playing time Floor leader Paulette Williams was next putting in 16 points She was followed by Abbey Falcon scoring a career-high 14 points Sharina Alston was the last Panther to reach double digits and the only one to notch a double-double with 11 rebounds and 12 points

Reserve players Nikki Milliorn and Danielle Irwin also chipped in for the cause with 7 and 4 points respectively Point guard Alyssa Ramirez had a big night with 5 points and a whopping 16 assists Nevah Navarro rounded out the action with a bucket from the foul line and helped make a nice round final score of 80 - 30

DUBrsquoS CORNERThe year 2010 was my Lost and Found Year I had quintuple bypass surgery early in January I permanently lost the youthful feeling of invincibility My wife Kathy and my Uncle Earl literally never left my side for the week that I was in the Hospital The hospital staff complained that I had too many friends visiting They were worried that I couldnrsquot rest because of all the visitors I found that to be a problem that I could live with We all lost a number of ldquogiversrdquo to the Grim Reaper last year People like Mac Gilliat Norris Fisher Pop Crider George Faulkner and too many others too list Not a day goes by that I donrsquot miss these folks They were the kind of people that gave more to the community than they took The good news is that while these people will never be replaced I have found that there are a number of newcomers that are stepping up to fill the void Givers people like Rick and Shelly Collins of the Leakey Mercantile Johnny Seibert of the Frio Pecan Farm and Glenn Bradley of the Hondo National Bank These people give a lot more of their time and their resources to the community than they take and the Frio Canyon is a better place because of their efforts Kathy and I lost some business associates this year because they wanted to spread their wings and do their own thing Irsquom not going to lie That hurt and it still does I considered them to be like family and this may sound funny to some of you but I still do I sincerely wish them well They are young and ambitious compared to me anyway and they didnrsquot do a thing that I didnrsquot do myself earlier in my career They are good at what they do and I have found that the better the competition the better I have to be and thatrsquos a good thing I was sitting beside my father in the Leakey United Methodist Church when he walked down the aisle to accept the Lord That was in 1961 That left me sitting alone in the pew but not for long Tela Patterson slid in beside me put her arm around my shoulders and hugged me to death figuratively Twenty years later I lost my father and his funeral service was held in the same church Tela was one of the first in line to give me comfort Kathy and I joined LUMC six years ago and you guessed it Tela was one of the first to come stand beside us welcoming us to the church Candle Light Service was beautiful at our little church this year as always But what made it special was that Tela met me at the door on the way out and kissed me on the cheek I have found Tela to be a Rock that I can depend upon Itrsquos plain that for every door that closes another opens I look forward to 2011 Irsquom ready for any and all challenges the year wants to throw at me because I donrsquot have to go it alone My faith my family and my friends are all that I need Come see us the coffee pot is onDub

Kathleen was the second child and the oldest daughter in the Banta family She was born at DrsquoHanis but claims to be a Frio Canyon girl having lived here during the 1930rsquos and early 1940rsquos She was the child of Josephine Catherine Haby and John Frank Banta ldquoJosierdquo was a student at Cypress Creek School when John Frank Banta came to the East Frio Canyon to teach at that location Kathleen and her several siblings attended school at Leakey When Pearl Harbor was bombed Dec 07 1941 many male students of Leakey School made plans to immediately join the military services The halls of the school were emptied of many young men Some few chose to finish their last one or two years and did so then volunteered for one of several services The girls heard of jobs where the air fields were being built to train Air Force personnel Uvalde and Hondo were two of those near towns Kathleen Banta had relatives at Uvalde the Hansons so she went to stay with them until they moved back to Leakey She remembers

Guy and Estelle Shackelford living there where he was employed by a motor sales company Rube Dulaney and his family were also residents there She rented a room for $150 per week and first found employment at Oak Grove that served 21 flavors of ice cream hamburgers hot dogs and sandwiches She stated it was a popular ldquospotrdquo for young and old alike Besides her $800 per week wages they furnished her food

A f t e r war broke out Kathleen went to work at Garner Field for $8000 per month She became very homesick so prevailed upon her friend Gretna Tierce at Leakey to come to Uvalde to work and live with her The planned move was made and they both paid the rent

of $l50 per week Kathleen was a mechanic at the field and Gretna packed parachutes Other girls she remembers from Leakey who were mechanics were Doris Tomerlin and Olene Fisher Kathleen and Gretna were both asked on one occasion to work serving a meal at Kincaid Hotel They were paid $l00 for that nightrsquos wages and they thought that was very good wages Kathleen remembers she spent

A f t e r war broke out Kathleen went to work at Garner Field for $8000 per month She became very homesick so prevailed upon her friend Gretna Tierce at Leakey to come to Uvalde to work and live with her The planned move was made and they both paid the rent

of $l50 per week Kathleen was a mechanic at the field and Gretna packed parachutes Other girls she remembers from Leakey who were mechanics were Doris Tomerlin and Olene Fisher Kathleen and Gretna were both asked on one occasion to work serving a meal at Kincaid Hotel They were paid $l00 for that nightrsquos wages and they thought that was very good wages Kathleen remembers she spent

her dollar around the corner at J S Penney Company store where she bought a black sweater According to Kathleen they met many interesting cadets Looking back she said she has many good memories of that time but she did not realize it so much at the time She mentioned the dates the girls had with the military personnel after work She stated with definite fondness ldquoeven though I have lived in Uvalde all the years my roots are still there in the Frio Canyonrdquo After the war both she and Gretna found employment at Bell Telephone Company in Uvalde and both worked for that concern until their retirement Kathleen married Jesse Frank James Uvalde resident and a serviceman She lived in that same rented location with her little daughter until Frank returned after three years military service They bought

a comfortable home where she remains in residence until this date Dec 2010 Frank passed away several years ago Gretna married Bob Tampke of Leakey They resided at Midland Texas for several years ndash then moved back to Leakey where they lived until their deaths (Interview and transcription by Marjorie Kellner)

For his meals and beautiful room nothingTotal Bradley owes Mother Nothing Bradley sat looking at this new bill without saying a word After a few minutes he got up pulled the eight dollars out of his pocket and placed them in his motherrsquos hand And after that he helped his mother for love ldquo adapted from Hugh T Kerr ldquoGo placidly amid the noise amp haste amp remember what peace there may be in silence As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others even the dull amp ignorant they to have their story Avoid loud and aggressive persons they are vexations to the spirit If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans Keep interested in your own career however humble it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time Exercise caution in your high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism Be yourself Especially do not feign affection Neither be cynical about love for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass Take kindly the counsel of the years gracefully surrendering

A f t e r war broke out Kathleen went to work at Garner Field for $8000 per month She became very homesick so prevailed upon her friend Gretna Tierce at Leakey to come to Uvalde to work and live with her The planned move was made and they both paid the rent

of $l50 per week Kathleen was a mechanic at the field and Gretna packed parachutes Other girls she remembers from Leakey who were mechanics were Doris Tomerlin and Olene Fisher Kathleen and Gretna were both asked on one occasion to work serving a meal at Kincaid Hotel They were paid $l00 for that nightrsquos wages and they thought that was very good wages Kathleen remembers she spent

her dollar around the corner at J S Penney Company store where she bought a black sweater According to Kathleen they met many interesting cadets Looking back she said she has many good memories of that time but she did not realize it so much at the time She mentioned the dates the girls had with the military personnel after work She stated with definite fondness ldquoeven though I have lived in Uvalde all the years my roots are still there in the Frio Canyonrdquo After the war both she and Gretna found employment at Bell Telephone Company in Uvalde and both worked for that concern until their retirement Kathleen married Jesse Frank James Uvalde resident and a serviceman She lived in that same rented location with her little daughter until Frank returned after three years military service They bought

a comfortable home where she remains in residence until this date Dec 2010 Frank passed away several years ago Gretna married Bob Tampke of Leakey They resided at Midland Texas for several years ndash then moved back to Leakey where they lived until their deaths (Interview and transcription by Marjorie Kellner)
