Encouraging Reading - from a

library perspective

“I read because one life isn't enough, and in the page of a book I can be anybody;I read because the words that build the story become mine, to build my life;I read not for happy endings but for new beginnings; I'm just beginning myself, and I wouldn't mind a map;I read because I have friends who don't, and young though they are, they're beginning to run out of material;I read because every journey begins at the library, and it's time for me to start packing;I read because one of these days I'm going to get out of this town, and I'm going to go everywhere and meet everybody, and I want to be ready.”

Richard Peck, Anonymously Yours

Reading is awesomeWhy do you read? Or why don't you

read?

Should you read?

Should you read the things your students like to read?

Should they read the things you like to read?

Do you know what is hot?

With your boys?

With your girls?

With everyone?

Warning

Controversial slide coming up

Be prepared to be offended

What frustrates the heck out of librarians?

English teachers who don't even try to read the books their 'clients' are interested in.

Oh wait ... there is more

English teachers who refuse to accept that kids have different taste to them

- Mr Pip!

What still more.......?

And those English teachers who've read a couple of books, 5 years

ago .... and show only those books to students.

You gotta keep current.

Oh come on, there can't be more

Literacy leaders and RTLB staff who have no experience with the books

students can read and would want to read

Seriously .....

An English teacher who doesn't read.....

is like a man working in lingerie shop!

Just wrong

So, I'll go back to being nice

What makes students want to read?

I think…Interesting books

Interested adults

Interaction with reading peers

Identifying with the books available

Involving students in choice

How do you make those things happen - just four

things A decent budget

Staff who know YA literature and read it and prove they are interested

Ways for students to get together and discuss reading

& Make it fun!

How do we do it at King's• Staff have books thrust at them as

well as students• Budget• BookGang & BookMafia• Reading periods with booktalks• Everyone reads from the King's

library• Competition• Staff talk about their reading • Suggestions from students are

important

Expect this from your kickarse librarian

• Your librarian is out in classes working with you and the students - not in the workroom all the time

• Part of the teaching team• Offers a different but

complementary skill set to the teacher

• Provides tools which staff can use• Loves working with students and

staff

And

A love of reading. Reading the kind of stuff your students read. And the stuff that extends their reading.

and reading and

reading and

reading and

readi…

And make sure your librarian,

is never dull!

IT IS SO BAD FOR OUR IMAGE!

Lets look at some books!
