Read the “What Does a Geneticist Do?” Answer

questions 1-8 in your SIN under the Warm Up

WARM-UP: DO NOT MARK ON/WRITE ON SHEET

TRAITS

Some traits are given to you through genes and some are acquired. Give me some examples

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

There is a greater variation in offspring when dealing with sexual reproduction. Why?

Two parents with two sets of DNA.

GENES

Unit of heredity that occupies a specific location on a chromosome

and codes for a particular product. IN PAIRS!

HEREDITY

Passing of genes from parent to offspring.

Many traits are coded by more than just one gene.

ALLELES

Various forms of the same gene are called alleles.

Ex. Height- we have many variations of heightCOME IN PAIRS!!!

PHENOTYPE

Describes the actual characteristics that can be observed

Ex. Height, size of feet, absence or presence of fold in eyelid.

GENOTYPE

Name for the genes an organism has

Not always obvious from the phenotype

Sometimes your genes contain information that is not expressed in your phenotype.

DOMINANT ALLELE

Expressed in the phenotype even if only one copy is present in the genotype

Even if the other allele is an alternative form.

RECESSIVE ALLELE

Expressed only when two copies of it are present.

If one chromosome in the pair contains a Dominant allele,

and the other a Recessive, The Dominant allele will be expressed!!

Individually, read the “Genetics Vocabulary” worksheet and answer the

questions.(If not finished, we will finish tomorrow.)
