TherearetimesduringAcademyAward-winningdirectorMartinScorsese’s(“TheDeparted”)thriller“ShutterIsland”whereyoucanfeel theanxietyof thepicture frothingup insideyourgut.OnceRobbie Robertson’s disturbing Hitchcockian score and RobertRichardson’smisery-stricken cinematographymerge to create theominoustoneduringtheopeningscenes,itisobviousScorseseplanstokeepyouasuneasyashepossiblycanforaslongashecan.
There is only so much, however, that a masterful director likeScorseseandafewmembersofhistechnicalcrewcandobeforeitsfoundationcollapsesfromunderthem.AdaptedfromtheDennisLehane(“MysticRiver”)novelofthesamename,screenwriterLaetaKalogridis (“Alexander”) ridesScorsese’s coattail as far as she canbefore thework itself shrinksback intopredictabledarkcorners.Thetwistand turnsmightbe sharp,but thatdoesn’tmake themanylessdull.
CollaboratingforthefourthtimewithScorsese,AcademyAwardnomineeLeonardoDiCaprio(“TheAviator”)playsTeddyDaniels,aU.S.marshalinvestigatingthedisappearanceofRachelSolando,amurderessfromamentalhospitalknowntohousethemostcriminallyinsanepatients.Teddy’snewpartnerChuck(MarkRuffalo) joinshimonhistourthroughthefacilitieswhereheplanstointerrogateeveryonewhoknowsRachel, includingpsychiatristsDr.Cawley
(SirBenKingsley)andDr.Naehring(MaxvonSydow)whoaren’texactlycooperatingwithTeddy’smethodsofinquiry.
Teddy,however,hasmoretoworryaboutthanunsupportiveheaddoctorswhoseemtobehidingthetruth.Nightmaresofhisdeadwife(MichelleWilliams)andhistimeinthewarbegintohaunthimasheandChuckendupstrandedontheislandduringaviciousthunderstorm.Theyarethetypeofhallucinationsthatwouldeasilybedismissediftheywereinanyotherhorror-typemovie,butsinceScorseseisdirectingthesceneswe’reledtobelievethattheyshouldbeconsideredmoreartisticthanoverly-stylistic.Howeveryouwanttoidentifythem,theyhavenobearingonanyemotionalaspectofthestory,whichisunfortunatesincetheyarerevisitednumeroustimes.
MostoftheemotionalpullcomesfromDiCaprio’sperformanceitself.Walkingafinelinebetweenawarenessandmadness,hison-the-spotportrayalofamanuncertainofhisownmentalwelfareashecavesinonhimselfisfrightening.Still,thesuspenserefusestotakeanotherstepforwardoncethepiecesstartfittingtogethermoreobviously.Oncethatoccurs,itisonlyamatterofwaitingouttherestoftheunsubstantialplotpointsin“ShutterIsland.”Bythen,allthedreadhassubsidedandthatballofnervesthatwasflounderingaroundinsideyouearlierfeelsmorelikebadindigestion.
