Zakat-ul-Fitr (break fast charity): It is obligatory on each Muslim young or old, male or fe-male, rich or poor, to give Zakat-ul-Fitr if he has food exceeding his and his dependents needs for one day and one night. A Muslim must pay on his own behalf and on the behalf of dependents that he is obligated to support such as his children and his wife. Zakatul-Fitr is given to poor Muslims, whose income is less than their basic needs. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) described it as food for the poor. It must be given before Eid prayer. The prophet (S.A.W.) said, "If a person gives it before Eid prayer it is accepted, and if a person gives it after the prayer, then it is merely charity." The Social Welfare committee of IAR starts collecting Zakat-ul-Fitr on the 20th night of Ramadan until day of Eid before start of Eid prayer.

This year Zakat-ul-Fitr is estimated to be $13 per person.
