RAJHANS VIDYALAYA
From the Principal’s Desk
“The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of
independence.” -Denis Waitley Humans have four endowments – self-awareness,
conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... the power to
choose, to respond and to change.
What is independence? Is it freedom to do anything any way or is it to break the shackles of your mental bonds
and work for the unison of humanity?
Independence without responsibility can cause disaster therefore we should realize the role of responsibility in
independence and imbibe it in our thoughts and actions.
The Communique helps the students to think independently and handle it with responsibility.

PERCEPTION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY IN TODAY'S WORLD
-PariBhoite&Kushagr Jain
On the 15th of August in 1947, India became free from unexplainable hangings and shootings, unreasonable oppression & proxy wars. All in order to realise the dream of a society where no citizen would be discriminated against on the groundsof religion, ethnicity & skin colour. But,
this didn’t come easy.
The Indian independence movement began in 1857 & lasted until 15 August 1947. The movement involved many political and social organizations and armed and unarmed struggle. Most importantly, blood of our fellow Indians was shed, partitions were made & finally, India
attained Independence.
But as the years are going by, is the Independence Day losing its authenticity? Is it being seen as another reason to plan a short trip or to sleep in till noon or as an excellent movie release
date? With a heavy heart, I must say that yes, today, it is seen that the Independence Day is a victim of “misuse.”Sure most schools & work places do have short ceremonies like flag hoisting for the sake of formalities, but is there any respect or impact on the minds and hearts of India’s
youth for this significant day?
No one can really define what an Indian citizen is supposed to do or feel on this day. But, moral values instilled in a person must encourage him to go on with this day with a sense of immense pride, admiration, and respectfor our freedom fighters. Every sacrifice made and every life lost
to the hope, that one day our country would be free from the vices of inequality and oppression should be honoured. We must be truly grateful to each and every person involved in
acquiring the freedom of India from the British. Finally, the big question arises - how can we restore the patriotism in the hearts of the general public? For this, a nationwide feeling of unity
must exist. To get this started, in schools for example, we should encourage each and every Student to express themselves, to say what they really feel about their nation. This, along with letting their creativity flow in the favour of beautiful artworks and amazing literary pieces will
allow the citizens to once again cherish the true freedom of India.

Democracy in Rajhans
- AnushreeWagh&Himanshi Choudhry
Team work is highly essential for progress and requires a clear vision of success. Here at RajhansVidyalaya we believe in inculcating in the spirit of democracy. The election for the
school council is usually held a week or two before the 15thof August. The selected students campaign for their positions and to attract voters. The students who are the voters then select
their captain through the election process. The results are then announced. The investiture ceremony takes place on 15th August. The Chief Guest honours the captains with their badges
and sash denoting their houses. The newly elected school captain then delivers the vote of thanks .This council will lead the school body for the following year and attend important
functions as school representatives
2017: The year of Artificial Intelligence
-AdvaitMehla
When the term Artificial Intelligence was coined in 1955, it referred to machines that could perform tasks that required intelligence when performed by humans. It has come to mean machines that simulate human cognitive processes, i.e. they mimic the human brain in how
they ‘think’ and process. They learn, reason, judge, predict, infer and initiate action.
Until a few years ago, Artificial Intelligence was mostly restricted to the fantasies of science fiction writers and movie producers. Concepts of AI have been really popular in these fields. AI takeover is a common theme in science fiction and popular culture. The Terminator series is a great example of this. The series features a defense supercomputer named Skynet which "at birth" attempts to exterminate humanity through nuclear war and an army of robot soldiers
called Terminators because Skynet deemed humans a lethal threat to its newly formed sentient existence.

Once we accept our limits, we can go beyond them August 17
Rapid advances in technology and increased priority to research in top technology companies have led to AI finally becoming reality. Although they have not yet become ubiquitous enough to wrestle power from and exterminate their human creators, they are already in our lives in
some form or the other, and continuing to advance. Apple’s digital personal assistant, Siri, is an AI sitting inside iPhones of millions of people. Companies like Uber are investing millions of
dollars in making self-driving cars a reality. Self-driven cars essentially have a brain of their own – in a few years they will be dependable enough to be trusted in their judgment as much as
human drivers are.
Go—a 2,500-year-old game that's exponentially more complex than chess—human grandmasters have maintained an edge over even the most agile computing systems. Researchers at Google’s Deep Mind, an AI development project, recently developed a
computer, Alpha Go which went undefeated in six games of Go against the European Go champion Fan Hui. This machine emerged victorious in a machine-versus-man contest in a
game that is highly regarded as one of the toughest in history.
Machines have also been associated with being a set of mathematical programming incapable of producing creativity or art of any type. Startlingly, this too is being surpassed. A 17 year old teen, Robbie Barrat developed a rapping AI bot by using Kanye West’s lyrics Human judges are
increasingly being unable to distinguish between humans and AIs. An AI computer can now pass the Turing test, designed by the legendary cryptographer Alan Turing to differentiate between a human and a machine. You can now engage in a natural conversation with an AI chatbot online.
These are extremely intelligent and can handle most of the conversation-scenarios administered by humans with ease.
AI and Machine Learning go hand in hand. Machine learning describes the ability of a machine to learn tasks without being actually programmed to do so. A machine can now analyse and
find patterns in massive and complex data to extract knowledge about any given topic and can think and find its own way out of a problem. This eliminates the need for any human
involvement and automates a host of daily tasks in fields like banking, healthcare, finances and many more.We can use AI to extend and augment human capability to solve real problems that affect health, poverty, education and politics. If there is a problem, taking a new look at solving it through the lens of AI will almost always be warranted. We can make cars drive on their own
and buildings more energy efficient with lines of code. We can virtually disarm terrorists and

save humans having to go into combat. We can diagnose diseases better and find cures faster. We can start to predict the future. And we can begin to augment and change that future for the
better.
Independence Day
This day we became free
From the deplorable creed
Of the perfidious albion
In this farewell
There was blood
Discounting the cult
God was the alibi
Of this autarky
Over two centennial
They showed no mercy
But in the aftermath
Our leaders kissed death for liberty
Remembering them, dauntless
Here we stand
With our hands held high
Saluting our winsome flag

WHAT MENTAL HEALTH IS & WHAT IT ISN’T?
-PariBhoite
Mental health awareness for many years had been kept behind the curtains, but thankfully, over the years people have come in terms with it & embraced people with mental health issues. We’ve gone past the stages where articles would be written just to introduce the then new concept- mental health. With terms like panic attacks & anxiety issues coming up, it has helped other people to understand problems of people having these issues. Just the fact that people now address these issues freely is comforting to those suffering from mental health problems like crippling depression.
We are probably very close to now treating these issues like just another random flu, in simpler words, to not treat the person suffering from these in a different manner. But unfortunately, at the same there’s a line that’s being crossed. There are people who’re regarding stage fear as an extreme anxiety related disorder, people regarding simple adrenaline rushes as panic attacks and people who’re susceptible to getting irritated are self-diagnosing themselves as victims of an OCD. Subsequently, the doctors & pharmacists are earning money off prescribing drugs that those “affected” don’t actually need.
When you’re labelling yourself as a victim of mental health issues without a proper diagnosis, you’re only making up excuses for your inability to accept who you are, you’re acting as a parasite & cutting in the line of those who really have these issues. Wake up, stand up for yourself & try to come in terms with who you are.
Most mental health issues can be remedied by doing what’s scaring you or holding you back, by exposing yourself a bit more, by loving yourself, by adopting methods of self care& most importantly, having a positive outlook. A little change in the atmosphere can largely affect how you’re feeling.
“It’s never too late to become the person you’ve always wanted to be.”

The Magic of Books
- Himanshi Choudhry &Kushagr Jain
Books, considered by many to be dreadfully boring, are the world's greatest source of
information and entertainment in our opinion. A book is like a movie playing out in your head,
and fuelled by your imagination. They are like a best friend to people who feel left out, a great
companion for those who believe in them and a good source of criticism against those who
loathe books. People these days read various types of novels depending on their moods or their
surroundings. For instance, when a person is sad or troubled for some reason, they would
prefer reading books that share their thoughts. Just as a coin has two faces, a book similarly has
a positive as well as a negative impact on its readers. It all comes down to the reader whether
they choose to surround themselves with either the book's positive side, or it's negative aspect.
During the development of the novel, people had many beliefs regarding the book's contents.
The general public thought that reading novels might deprive them of their culture and social
life, taking them to an imaginary world created by the book itself. Though, the passage of time
has changed the people's mindset regarding book reading. In our opinion, a book is like a recipe
for entertainment, companionship, and emotions, where the author adds a plethora of
ingredients such as romance, crime, thriller, fantasy etc. to allow the readers to pick out their
perfect recipe for their tastes. All to enter a realm of pure literature and imagination, where the
prowess of the author knows no bounds. A land where the reader can reside in as a means of
escape to stay with the unique taste of the recipe they chose.

You Will Find the Bright Places
- Bhavya Raj
About a week ago, my Patella was dislocated. I wish I could sound heroic and say
something amazing. But this is what happened. I was walking down our school
staircase when I thought the steps had ended. So, I fell down and dislocated my
Patella. I went to the hospital and came back home late in the evening with a
brace on my leg and the heavy words of the doctor echoing in my head.
Fortunately for me, I had borrowed from a friend, on that very day, a very
beautiful book called ‘All the Bright Places’ written by Jennifer Niven. This book is
about two people, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. Their friendship kicks off
when they are assigned a school project. The project is to wander Indiana, visit a
few wonders, delve into its history and appreciate the state. What Violet hides is
that about a year ago she lost her sister in a car accident and blames herself for it.
Finch suffers from a Bipolar disorder and lives with a problematic family. This
book is the perfect example of how two completely different people, one very
popular and another a wallflower, can become each others reason to survive. This
book also talks about the stigma surrounding mental illness and shows how with
compassion and love people can be pulled out of depressing circumstances. One
quote that perfectly describes the book is- “ You are all the colours in one, at full
brightness.”

Blue leads to Black-Out
By Vedant N. Kulkarni
“This game has treated our beautiful life as a game; it should be banned.” The “Blue Whale Game” also called the “Blue Whale Challenge” is an internet game that has claimed to exist in several countries. The game allegedly consists of a series of tasks assigned to the players by an administrator
during a 50-day period with the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide. The term
Blue Whale comes from the phenomenon of Whales deliberately stranding themselves on the
beach, which is linked to suicide.
The game began in Russia in 2013 and allegedly caused its first suicide in 2015. Philip Budeikin,
a former Psychology student has claimed that he invented the game. It has claimed the lives of
130 teens in Russia. Recently in India, a 14-year-old boy Manpreet Singh, resident of Mumbai,
committed suicide after falling under the influence of the game. Two other cases have been
recorded where teenagers have attempted suicide, in Indore and Solapur.
This game can be played on many social media platforms. The game consists of 50 tasks like
watching horror movies, self-harming, and waking up at unusual hours. The game instigates the
players to commit suicide by jumping off a building as the final task.
Children should be assertive, mentally strong and reject such foul means. Parents need to
encourage open talking and show love at this complicated age and develop a healthy
relationship, so as to avoid any such cases in the future. Awareness has to be created by elders
and peers.
It is high time that we understand the gravity of the situation, let us buckle our armours and
march forth to set the wrongs right. Together we can and we will make the difference.

SOCIAL MEDIA & ITS TRENDS
-PariBhoite&MalaikahNiyazi
A trend can be put as a social process in which style or taste changes. In 2017, with its variety of
social media platforms like Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram etc. spotting & adapting a
trend or even starting a trend is anything but difficult. A trend can be described as something
which is “cool”, something that humans, especially teens relate to or find funny or want to
imitate.
Trends might be the “in” thing for that temporary period but won’t the 2027 you, upon looking
back in 2017 cringe at faded and torn clothing, 17 layers of makeup that you had on & those
chokers? Oh and there’s worse; 10 years on, would you still find that LED fidget spinner of yours
addictive? See that’s the thing about trends, they come & go. You buy a galaxy themed phone
cover today & tomorrow plain rose-gold covers are the hot things.
Trends help in everything from spreading wide-spread awareness to making sure you’re up to
date with fashion. Isn’t it only because of these trends that most Americans are aware of the
inabilities of their President? Would we ever know about North Korea’s ballistic missiles if it
wasn’t trending on twitter? Yes, these things have made an appearance in the newspapers but
only a small proportion of students actually read newspapers nowadays. Social media happens
to be bridging a gap between students and current affairs.
How do things become trends though? Is there any official body that labels them as “trends?”
Or do Russians hack a social media post so that it starts to trend? Fortunately and obviously, it’s
neither of the two. It all depends on how clickbait it’s title is and how relatable that particular
post is. Would you still read this article with interest if it did not have the names of some of
your favorite social media right in the second line? Wouldn’t you develop a too moralizing and
~ 12 ~
The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination August 17
boring sort of perception over this article if it was named “SOCIAL MEDIA & ITS INFLUENCES?”
So that’s clickbait and its association with trends.
To sum it up, trends are the most important and yet sometimes unnecessary things in our lives.
Important because how else would it be possible to organize global Pride Marches or the
Maratha Kranti March & absolutely unnecessary when Game of Thrones spoilers are out in the
open, trending on #1 or when #covfefe is trending.
And once and for all, that dress was blue & black.
A Rising Star
By Vedant N. Kulkarni &Mayurakshi Chatterjee
The under-16 team representing RajhansVidyalaya in football, participated in the MSSA (Mumbai School Sports Association). The team consisted of students from 9th and 10th grade. The effort was united but the knight in the shining armour for the team was the two times best athlete V. Arun. The versatile footballer scored a staggering six goals in two matches, which turned out to be the sole reason for the team’s qualification into the next round. His strong presence on the field daunted the opponent team. His breath-taking speed, impressive dribbling skills, physical powers, technique and remarkable shot power left them awestruck. The first match was against SVKM-VILE PARLE at ST.XAVIER’S ground and the second against ST.BLAISE at the same venue. Though winning the first match was a piece of cake where Arun scored his first three goals but in the second encounter, the atmosphere did turn from confidence and elation to tension for the team but the maestro staged a great comeback by scoring two more goals, which led to the triumph. It was an incredible victory for the team in both the matches, where Arun maintained his performance throughout and strived to be the best in both the matches. He is being pictured as motivation and a source of great pride. Working strong and arduously can make one reach great heights.
