The Story of KnockAt about 8 o’clock on the Thursday evening of the 21st ofAugust, 1879, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph andSt. John the Evangelist appeared at the South gable of theChurch at Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. Beside them anda little to the right was an altar with a cross and the figureof a lamb, around which angels hovered. There werefifteen official witnesses to the apparition – young and old– who watched it for two hours in pouring rain and recitedthe Rosary. Two Commissions of Enquiry accepted theirtestimony as trust-worthy and satisfactory in 1879 and1936.Today, Knock is one of the world’s major Marian Shrines.It has received many Papal honours including thedistinction of two papal visits, Pope St. John Paul II in 1979and Pope Francis in 2018.

The Rosary or Mass and Holy Communion is recommended each day.

The National Public Novena takes place each year at Knock Shrinefrom the 14th to the 22nd of August. Prayer leaflets can be obtainedin any of the Shrine Offices. Two sessions are held daily, namely at3.00pm and 8.00pm. Both sessions commence with ConcelebratedMass in the Basilica which is followed by a Procession to theApparition Gable. A procession of the Blessed Sacrament is heldin the afternoon and the beautiful candlelightprocession takes place at night.For those who cannot be present, the Novenamay be made at home or in the local Church. Thisgives them a share in the Masses and prayersbeing offered each day at the Shrine.
