GEOMETRY IN MATHEMATICSBy the end of these sessions students will:- Know when to use the statements,- Be able to justify explanations,- Provide coherent reasoning to solve the problems.

Session 1 – Geometry rulesSession 2 – Writing linked statementsSession 3 – Review and improveSession 4 – Fluency of written communication

COMMUNICATING MATHEMATICALLY“In questions that relate to Geometry candidates can be asked to give a reason for a calculation or proof. In many cases this is related to angles. This could also be part of a requirement for candidates to communicate in mathematical terms. If questions have an asterisk they are also linked to QWC (Quality of Written Communication) marks, again for communicating mathematically. ”

COMMUNICATING MATHEMATICALLY“In Geometry the need to communicate in mathematics terms is embodied in mathematical statements relating to geometrical properties. It is important that candidates show with clarity their understanding of the use of any geometrical property that they might use in solving problems.”

WRITING LINKED STATEMENTS

In the last session you discussed the geometry rules and are aware of the key statements that must be learnt (and used) in the exams.

In this session there is analysis of questions requiring the use of these statements in order to solve the problems presented.

Refer back to the geometry rules. Which ones can be used? Discuss.

From the mark scheme:

Now review the following question and write down the statements that would help to solve the problem.

More foundation and higher questions are available.

ANALYSISReview the annotated question that

you’ve been given. The markscheme is attached.

What makes sense? What must be changed?Re-write the answer, to gain full marks, as

if you were in the exam.

EXAM QUESTIONSIn the last session you saw how to answer a geometry question using the correct statements and discussed how to answer another. For this session you will be able to answer two or three questions. In the last five minutes swap what you have written with another person.• Have they used the correct statements?• Is the order logical?• Is the answer clear and correct?

Write down any improvements that they could make.
