THIS WEEK’S: 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading — (Genesis 18:1-10)
Responsorial Psalm — (Psalm 15)
Second Reading — (Colossians 1:124-28)
Gospel — (Luke 10:38-42)
NEXT WEEK’S: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading — Abraham has just en-tertained three visitors in whom he has recognized the eternal God. Now, as they depart, God shares with Abraham the purpose of the three visitors’ jour-ney to Sodom and Gomorrah. As soon as Abraham becomes aware of the cit-ies’ impending doom, he begins his in-tercession. Abraham is apparently as aware of the people’s sinfulness as God is and possesses a heart as open and generous as God’s in asking mercy for a people that has fallen so short of God’s expectations. (Genesis 18:20-32)
Responsorial Psalm—“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.” (Psalm 13)
Second Reading—God’s great love and mercy are manifested through Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection for our salvation — not because we had become worthy or earned God’s favor. No, indeed. God acted decisively on our behalf when we still bore the stain of sin, when our likeness to the Creator was twisted and contorted by sin. It was then, when we could not act on our own behalf, that God acted for us.
(Colossians 2:12-14)
Gospel—Jesus’ formula for efficacious prayer is rather simple: don’t multiply words but be persistent. Here, Jesus’ prayer simply addresses God as “Father” and names God as the one who sustains us each and every day, forgives us our sins, and keeps us from “the final test.” Many debate the role of prayer and wonder if it “changes God’s mind” or simply disposes the pray-er to accept whatever God’s will turns out to be. Here, it is clear that Jesus encourages the believer to pray and to pray insistently. (Luke 11:1-13)
Please note that names will be removed from the prayer list after 30 days unless
we hear from you otherwise.
Communion to the Homebound Catholics who are unable to re-ceive Holy Communion at weekend Masses (i.e. homebound or due to illness), may call or have a family member contact the parish office for further information.
