slide presentation for TESL Language Camp XV 2014. We will have been given a day slot to handle a workshop on on any topic of choice. Since the theme for this year's language camp is Pushing the Limit, it would be appropriate to have a workshop on technology in the classroom or multimedia or web2.0 app of sort... this is the first draft of the presentation. I'm going to demo and take the students along for a hands on experience on a few of those mentioned software and web2.0 apps.

Current status:a global language of science, technology,

and international relations.

Many countries around the world consider the teaching of English a major educational

priority (Crystal 1997; McKay 2000).

EFL is often taught under unfavorable conditions

Result: high school graduates are not always competent users of English.

~ Take advantage of the continuing advances in multimedia technology.

~ Make an effort to integrate technology with in-class instruction.

~ Can help with some difficulties identified with the EFL situation, i.e. large class sizes and mixed-ability classrooms etc.

~ Better results have been achieved in training students to be autonomous learners where multimedia technology has been used in instruction.

~ Growing number of schools with facilities for students to access computers and audiovisual equipment.

ESL instruction often does not accomplish its objective and leaves students without an adequate level of proficiency in English. –rural schools/students.

A major issue is the environment itself:

~ An overall lack of English speakers for students to interact with.~

~ Technology changes very quickly.

~ Demand TESL teachers to master technology as well as mastering English as a global language,

~ The use of technological device is now an important factor in teaching and learning English.

~ Technological equipment is categorized as technical media for language teaching and learning. – instructional technology.

~ Technical media can present the outside world in all its complexities into the classroom (Brinton, 2001)

should master the use of technical media

> To enhance the process of teaching and learning English,

> To stimulate learners’ interest in learning English

> To familiarize learners in using technical media to support their process of learning English autonomously.

1. Who has a laptop /desktop /tab? (iPad)

2. Who use window?

3. Who has a smart phone?

4. Who has Facebook account?

5. Who subscribe to mobile data? Strymx? Etc.

1. Almost everyone owns a desktop/laptop. Inexpensive computers are now available to support the teaching and learning process (Sokolik, 2001)

> 90% are Microsoft Windows users.

Free software that comes with Microsoft Windows: MS Office, Internet Explorer, MS Paint, Publisher, MS Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Messenger, MS Sky Drive, Windows Live Writer, MS Family Safety

2. Mobile phone is easy to use, owned by all learners, and easy to operate - most learners have it -audio/video recorder and browser feature.

The use of mobile phone can be vary, started from creating a video as a project-based task (Modjanggo & Tungka, 2011), recording learners’ pronunciation, recording oral presentation, accessing monolingual dictionary provided as feature to build vocabulary understanding, browsing internet to help learners find something useful for their assignment, or sending email as their assignments (Şad, 2008).

3. Almost all learners have Facebook - create fun and enjoyable learning session via Facebook to monitor learners’ development in using target language

Create a page specifically designed for our class to discuss today’s material outside class time.

Not to directly discuss learners’ grammar mistakes but let them express what they have in mind related to today’s post, while at the same time give them opportunity to improve their self-confidence in using target language.

Should not avoid the use of technical media in classroom. Prepare our learners to compete - mastering English & the use of technology. -*stakeholders!

To avoid the trap of teaching technology rather than teaching English, we should pay attention to our learning objectives and to the language use of learners rather than how they appropriately or inappropriately use technical media in doing assignment.

Familiarize ourselves with the use of technical media in classroom

Provide a model of using technology as educational tool

Expose ourselves and our learners to the use of technology equipment to support our teaching and learning process

Prepare our EFL learners to compete in the information and technology era.

1. Free software: Creating Multimedia in the classroom –using Windows Live Movie Maker. (LSRW)

1. Free Web2.0 Apps: An Introduction Listening – PodcastsReading – BlogsWriting – StorybirdSpeaking – VoicethreadGlogsterEdu - LSRW
