THE SHEPHERD’S PEN Dear Members and Friends of St. Matthew’s, This will be my last article as your appointed Charge Pastor. Beth and I have really enjoyed being with you all these three years. We enjoyed getting to know as many of you as possible through the dinners Beth put on at the parsonage. I enjoyed working with those of you in leadership on various committees. I don’t know what I would have done that first year if it weren’t for the experi-ence of church staff, Children’s Center staff, all the volunteers who made up Sunday school, Worship, Bring, Grow, and Serve groups along with the Finance, Trustees, Pastor Staff Parish Rela-tions, and Leadership Development Commit-tees. We especially appreciated the small group studies, and those who were part of the groups we were in. Beth and I were blessed to travel to Kan-sas City for a gathering of Congregational Development Training, hosted by the United Methodist Church. We also to traveled to San Diego for a seminar on Leadership Training. It has been a great joy to be involved with Boy Scout Troup #730, and to witness over ten Eagle Courts of Honor. I have been in-spired by the dedication of those who serve the poor and homeless, and had the opportunity to serve with them on occasion. It has also been inspiring to see how generous you all have been in char-ity, ministry, and support of this place of worship; through your commitment to the operating and capital needs of your church. One ministry which has excited me, has been the Young Fami-lies Ministry Group. I believe this will become the impetus for a full family ministry from young couples to more mature families with teens and even local college ministry. But that is for all to envision and work out as Beth and I will be moving on to retire-ment status. A couple of things I would add: I really appreciated the music program of St. Matthew’s, and being part of the Choir for Cantatas, and the Bell Choir for their special music presentations. I also ap-
preciated, though with a little more nervousness, the Talent Shows. The first year was an eye opener in which I did a funny duet with Lorraine Randall. The second year I did a shaky Dean Martin sing-ing “Everybody Loves Somebody”. And this last time, I did a frail Bob Hope singing, “Thanks for the Memories.” And that is the message I hope to leave with you all, “Thanks for the Memories!”
Some of you already know about the ministry protocol whereby I must, for good reason, disconnect from pastoral relation-ship with you. Beth and I will count you among the many friends we have made through the church over our 33 years of service.
Beth and I will be glad to welcome you for a visit in our home in San Jacinto, CA, should you find yourself traveling out toward Palm Springs or Parker, AZ on I10. Just hang a right on state hwy 79 to Hemet and you can’t miss us not far from the valley below Beau-mont. Also, Beth has mentioned the Ramona Pageant which takes place in April/May each year. We could have a meal before or after the play. In the mean time, we are not gone yet, as I will be around as pastor until June 30, and in and out of the parsonage until the offi-cial move of our furniture on July 6.
Looking to the future, it is my desire that you all treat Pastor Stan and his wife Ellen with even more love than Beth and I have come to appreciate over the last three years. After all, he is a Fer-guson, even if he isn’t really my son, he is and will be a good pas-tor. Many of you remember Pastor Stan and Ellen from their last appointment here at St. Matthew’s over 13 years ago. The rest of you, I believe, will enjoy getting to know him. Try to remember that God made all of us unique and do all you can to appreciate Stan and Ellen for the gift of God they will be for you all. Sincerely, In Christ’s Service Together,
Pastor Bob Ferguson

Farewell
message from
Beth Ferguson:
It has been a
blessing and a
privilege to
serve with Bob
at St. Matthew’s, and be a member these
past three years. When Bob has been as-
signed to a new church appointment, I
have always joined the church he is serv-
ing in. When we move back to our home
in San Jacinto, I will join a local church in
our area, as I feel it is important to be a
part of a local church body.
As a member of St. Matthew’s, I have
been honored to serve as the Radical Hos-
pitality Chairperson and to teach the 5th –
8th grade Sunday School class. When I
leave, these two positions will need to be
filled. Please pray about it, and I’ll be
glad, along with Pam Pond, our Sunday
School Superintendent, to answer your
questions about this position.
It has been exciting to get to know many
of you better at the women’s breakfast,
the Gad-About events, small group gath-
ers at Bible study groups. It was fun
learning about how to play the handbells
our first year here.
Bob and I have appreciated the fellowship
when we had you to our home or have
been invited to your home. The potlucks,
refreshment time, “Guess Who’s Coming
to Dinner” and Progressive Dinners have
also been a great time of fellowship for
us.
The Servant Ministry Team has been a
great way to help meet the needs of our
community and we have enjoyed partici-
pating in the homeless meals, crop walks,
food pantry, the children’s hunger fund,
and all the other service needs in the com-
munity, the US and the world. It has also
been great to participate in the prayer
ministry and prayer shawl ministry.
Bob and I have so appreciated working
with the wonderful staff of St. Matthew’s.
Thank you Carol McClellan who is our
Administrative Assistant, Kory Reid, our
Music Director, Arian Galavis, our Ac-
companist, Ashlee Walker our Nursery
Attendant and Narima Latif, our Chil-
dren’s Center director and all the caring
staff who have cared for the children of
Newbury Park and surrounding areas. We
have also enjoyed working with all of the
dedicated leaders and their committee
members of the Administrative Boards.
As we get settled back in our home we
welcome visits, phone calls and e-mails
from all of you. Our home address in San
Jacinto is: 1375 Summerhouse Rd, San
Jacinto, CA 92582. Bob can be reached
on his cell phone at 951-265-2480, and
we will update you on our e-mail address
and land line phone numbers.
I have been blessed to share 33 years of
ministry with Bob and will carry many
fond happy memories as we retire from
full time ministry in the Methodist
Church. We are so glad that we could
retire from St. Matthew’s as it has been a
positive, wonderful loving experience to
have served with all of you.
Love in Christ,
Beth Ferguson
HOW DO I GIVE A GIFT TO THE
CHURCH?
How does it happen? How does someone
give a gift to the church?
Most of the time, people give financial
gifts in support of the operating budget or
special gifts of money in answer to a mis-
sion appeal. These are put forward by our
finance committee and approved by our
annual business meeting called a Charge
Conference.
In between times, the Administrative
Council can and does occasionally approve
special appeals or other changes to the
budget, after consultation with the Finance
Committee. Other gifts of service such as
teaching Sunday school, assisting in the
worship service, or being part of a Serve
Committee project, involve personal time
doing something. These gifts are usually
the responsibility of ministry committees of
the church.
Sometimes people wish to give gifts to
the church in memory of a loved one or
friend. Sometimes they want to give a gift
of some piece of property which requires
storage, upkeep, or repair over time. These
are the responsibility of our Trustee Board.
The trustees are responsible for the mainte-
nance, repair, and acquisition of property.
They take care of the insurance protection
for the church; and for the receipt and care
of bequeaths and bequest given to the
church. In all of these, the Trustee Board is
amenable to the Charge Conference of the
local church. Within the limits of the
United Methodist Church Book of Disci-
pline, the trustees decide whether to receive
a gift and how to use the gifts they receive.
Thanks Trustees for all the work you do to
meet the diverse needs of St Matthew’s
United Methodist Church, Newbury Park,
CA.
In Christ Together,
Pastor Bob

BLOOD DRIVE St. Matthew’s held its annual blood drive on Sun-day, May 16 with the use of the United Blood Ser-vices’ bloodmobile that was parked at the church during the 8:30 a.m. and 10:00a.m. worship ser-vices. We succeeded in meeting our participant goal of 14 with a total of 17 scheduled appoint-ments. Thanks to all who took part. Your dona-tion is truly instrumental in saving a life.
CELL PHONE COLLECTION We are continuing to collect used cell phones, which can be deposited in our cell phone collection box located in the church Narthex. These phones will be donated to support the efforts of the Coali-tion to End Family Violence, which operates throughout Ventura County to provide direct ser-vices to victims of violence and sexual assault, to educate the community regarding violence against women, children and men, and to prevent the cycle of violence.
THE CROPS ARE IN! By Jack Doman CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. CROP is a division of Church World Service. St. Matthew’s supported this once a year campaign in two ways. A dozen from the con-gregation collected funds and walked in the annual CROP walk that was held on March 7, 2010. Our congregation raised nearly $900 through that effort. CROP sponsored a matching fund drive through our local food bank, Manna, over the last two months. For every item donated to Manna, a chari-table foundation donated $1.00 to our local CROP to be used in the Conejo Valley. St. Matthew’s do-nated 231 items in this for Manna in March and April. Ours is a congregation that cares and shares.
SENIOR PREPAREDNESS By Jack Doman Throughout this last year, I have included articles on being pre-pared for all age groups and our pets. This month the message is aimed at those in my age category, and others who may have spe-cial health needs. The American Red Cross recommends that we have a health card to give rescuers the information that they need to help us if we are found unconscious or incoherent. This may be due to a major disaster or a personal emergency.
An emergency health card should contain all of the information about any health conditions and medications that a person takes on a regular basis. Additional information that should be included is your blood type, allergies or sensitivities, your insurance infor-mation, immunizations dates, date of birth and address. It is very important that you include telephone numbers of family and other support people that should be contacted in an emergency. Don’t forget the Pastor’s information.
Make several copies of the card and keep one in your wallet, one by your telephone at home, another with all of your emergency supplies, one in your car and another at work.
The information should be reviewed and updated every 6 months or when a major change occurs. We may be too old for the Girl or Boy Scouts, but remember that our generation is still setting exam-ples for the younger members of our family. This is a way to let them know that it is important to be prepared.

ST. MATTHEW’S CHILDREN’S CENTER CLOSES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2010
It is heartbreaking to bring you the news that the St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church Children’s Center will be closing on June 15th, 2010.
The decision was made after a three year decline of students, and a year of financial struggles; based on low child enroll-ments and after a multitude of marketing campaigns throughout Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks, producing too few new students. Our preschool program 3 years ago, served over 20 children and is now at 6. Enrollment at this level does not cover the expenses, and we have been using savings to cover salaries; only after teacher pay cuts and a reduction of hours. This is typical for the afterschool program as well. Narima, our Director, also voluntarily reduced her compensation. With com-mitments from less than a dozen children for the summer program, we cannot pay our teachers what they need and deserve. The Children’s Center By-Laws state, the program must be self-supporting financially. Having explored all possible alterna-tives, it was still a difficult decision by the Board of Directors to close. Please know that we appreciate all that you have done to support the wonderful teachers and efforts to keep this community resource available to Newbury Park families. With our continued prayers, St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church Children’s Center Board of Directors

The San Joaquin is California’s second longest river and its most endangered according to the group American Rivers. To rescue the river, EDF is using its signature approach: finding un-usual partners and common ground. Farmers in the Northern San Joaquin Valley have had difficulty paying for the cleanup of irrigation water polluted by pesticides, fertilizers and toxic metals. That gave our scientists Eric Holst and Stacy Small an idea: Why not partner with farm groups in the Valley to clean up critical waterways?
Together, we helped direct $12.5 million in federal funding to farmers who help stop runoff before it reaches the river. Work has begun to create temporary ponds to trap runoff, plant buffers strips along stream banks and grow hedgerows to help the predators of crop pests. For example, one pest species in Valley vineyards, the grape leafhopper, is preyed upon by a small parasitic wasps and fewer leafhoppers—and that means less pesticides. One big winner will be the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge, a stopover on the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds, including the Swainson’s Hawk and the Yellow Warbler. Another winner will be San Francisco, a highly threatened ecosystem fed by the water from the river. Submitted by Tina Martin
