Heuristics Skills

• Draw a diagram

• Make a list

To give a representation

• Guess and check

• Look for patterns

• Make suppositions

To make calculated guess

• Act it out

• Work backwards

• Before-after

To go through the process

• Restate the problem

• Simplify the problem

• Solve part of the problem

To change the problem

Tips for Parents

• Ensure that your child completes his homework daily.

• Encourage you child to attempt all questions in daily

assignments even if he has absolutely no idea how to do

it.

• Be cool. Avoid jumping to his rescue when he cannot

solve a problem. Guide him through by getting him to

verbalise and analyse his thoughts on how he can

approach the question.

• Review mistakes made. Cover solution and re-attempt

the question.

Train your child to check the reasonableness of the answers obtained.

Ann is 10 years old. Her father is four times her

age. How old will her father be in 5 years time?

10 x 4 = 40

40 x 5 = 200

Her father will be 200 years old in 5 years’ time.

Not

reasonable

Train your child to have the good habit of showing proper and detailed working steps.

Example:

1 100 + 1 450 = 2 550

Alice made 2 550 cookies.

1 100

+ 1 450

2 550

Correct alignment

of numbers

• Praise, encourage and motivate

• Strategize – focus on areas of weaknesses

• Time Management

• Ensure that mistakes made are corrected

• Manage stress

• watch for change in behaviour

Play mathematical games and solve mathematical games or puzzles with your child.
