Transcript of Project proposal on phenotyping finger millet

Evaluation of morpho-physiological trait diversity in finger millet genotypes under

rainfed conditions of Chota Nagpur Plateau and Deccan Plateau

Proposed Project TeamDr. S. Gutam (ICAR RCER RC Ranchi)

Prof. Z.A. Haider (BAU, Ranchi)Dr. H.S. Talwar (IIMR, Hyderabad)

July 2015 Project Proposal

Rational

“If we had known how to select for high yield

potential using criteria other than grain yield,

perhaps results could have been achieved by

way of enhanced total plant productivity rather

than just by changing the production ratio.”

- Blum (2005)

2

Objectives

1. To assess genetic diversity in morpho-physiological

traits (shoot & root) in finger millet genotypes.

2. To investigate important associations between

various morpho-physiological traits and yield in the

finger millet genotypes.

3. To classify the finger millet genotypes into various

groups on the basis of morpho-physiological traits.

3

Output & Outcome

Output Morpho-physiological shoot & root traits (phenotypic)

data and information of finger millet genotypes.

Outcome Generation of new knowledge on finger millet genotypes

and development of new locally adapted climate resilient

and more productive finger millet for smallholder farmers.

4

Technical Programme

Procurement of finger millet genotypes/accessions/varieties from various

sources viz., AICRP Millets Centres, NBPGR.

First year – kharif 2015 - in augmented design with checks at Ranchi

centre under normal field conditions at Ranchi.

Second year – kharif 2016 under abiotic stress conditions at two locations

(Chota Nagpur Plateau and Deccan Plateau).

Periodic recording of morpho-physiological traits (shoot & root), growth and

development. And yield & yield attributes at final harvest.

Data analysis, report writing and public release of data-sets.
