Let’s Start From the Beginning…

Do you have a documented charter?

Does your customer have a clear understanding of what

they want?

If so, use the WBS as a trust builder

If not, use the WBS effort to bring clarity

Do you have clear objectives for the project that ALL your

deliverables are linked to?

Customer Fears

• Fear of commitment misperception

– If they don’t commit they…

• Can add things later

• Don’t have to think of everything now

– And if they DO commit they…

• Are accountable for the outcome

WBS WIFM for the Customer

• WBS can visually demonstrate the complexity of the project

• Defines what is or isn’t in the project

• WBS should be build to align with what deliverables need to

be measured

• WBS can be used to hold people accountable

• Gives you an idea of what is really involved (time and cost)

WBS to Performance

• The WBS provides

– Insight into what is completed

– Allows for objective % complete

Strategies for Getting Sign-off

• By putting a WBS together with your customer, it demonstrates

– You have a grasp of the scope

– You understand the specific deliverables needed, not just the tasks

– You can show deliverables that the customer may not be thinking of, like PM deliverables

• Review the charter along with it for those things that are not included

• Spell out the change control process

Types of Customers

• Cooperative

• Detached

• Unrealistic

© 2015 Core Performance Concepts Inc.

What really happens?

• Market changes for the customer

• Priorities change for the customer

• They realized they made a mistake

• People doing requirements gathering

didn’t understand the vision

• What else?

Manage Scope During Execution

• Clear understanding of project objectives

• Gain agreement on Charter

• Gain agreement on MAJOR Deliverables

• Show progress on MAJOR Deliverables

• Remember the HOW can change

• Keep in mind how each deliverable contributes to

the objectives

© 2015 Core Performance Concepts Inc.

• The WBS is a tool to help communicate

understanding

• If everyone is on the same page with

understanding, why does Scope Creep

show up?

• What can you do to avoid that little guy?
