I thought the latter was the cause of the pain and the screaming. I had no morphia, just aspirin, which had no effect … I felt desperate … I finally instinctively sat down on the bed and took him in my arms, and the screaming stopped almost at once. Teaching and research in universities must be inseparable if their tuition is not to lag behind changing needs, the demands of society, and advances in scientific knowledge. (Magna Charta Universitatum, Bologna, 1988).

At their best universities are places where knowledge is generated, challenged,

tested as well as being taught. To do otherwise is to short change our students,

funders and communities.
