Soil Salinity

Non-saline lands are becoming saline under 4 circumstances:

i. Flooded by saline water

ii. Drought occurs in pre- monsoon season

iii. Drought occurs in post-monsoon season

iv. Irrigation by saline water

(Brammer, 1999).

● Around 2.85 million hectares of land is available in the coastal belt But only 0.83 million hectares of land is cultivable, of which 0.44 million is now salt-affected.

● According to SRDI, 7,50,380hectares of land was identified as salt-affected in 1973 and the amount of salt-affected land stood at 9,50,780 hectares in 2009.

● The upward trend in salinity intrusion is hampering crop production, particularly boro rice in the dry season.

● In the map, we can see how salt water is gradually engulfing a vast amount of land. In 1973, the amount of salt-affected land was around 0.7 million hectares which is marked by a blue line, while salt water covered more than 1.0 million hectares as surveyed in 2009 which is marked by a red line.

To face the problem of salinity to rice cultivation –grow salt tolerant rice varieties.

BINA developed rice varieties:

Binadhan-10 : can tolerate up to 12 ds/m of salinity which can be cultivated in 40-50% of those fallow lands in both Boro (dry season) and Aman (wet season) seasons. The farmers can get yield of 5.5-6.5 t/ha in saline land and 7.5-8.5 t/h in non-saline lands using this variety. The variety possess deep green and erect flag leaves, trunks and stems are strong, sturdy and remain erect (no lodging) even in stormy weather. Disease and pest attacks are very low and the production cost is same as

(Cont Binadhan 10) the other varieties. Binadhan-10 can be cultivated in a large part of saline prone areas of 13 coastal districts and more 4-5 million tons of additional rice can be produced a year. If the Government and private agencies could extend this variety in a large scale on lands having salinity up to 12 dS/m, it would enable the farmers as well as the country to have higher productivity, ensure food security and improve livelihood of the coastal farming community. (Ref.Dr. Mirza Mofazzal Islam, and Principal Scientific Officer, Plant Breeding Division and Head, Biotechnology Division, BINA).

Binadhan-8 : ● Farmers are harvesting this variety in 135-140 days and get a yield of four tons per hectare in salt-affected areas and above five tons in normal land.● It was found that without any salinity, farmers received around 5.5 tons of rice per hectare, which required 135-145 days to harvest. But when the variety was planted in salt-affected lands (8-12 dsm/metre), farmers received around three to four tons of rice per hectare, depending on the degree of salinity.

Seed production:Seed production is very essential for salt tolerant rice varieties because as new varieties are selected the seeds are not available in the market. For seed production plots technologies are similar to general cultivation process. However, the additional works to be done are discussed.

Rouging of off types:

Rouging off types means removal of rice plants other than the desired on. This should be done two tines, one at vegetative phase which means at growing and another at flowering stage. One can easily identify the off types by seeing the plant height of color and size of the panicles.

PotentialHarvest and Store: Harvesting is very important because at 80% of the grains maturity only good quality grains come out during threshing. In the border of the seed plot 1 meter should not be harvest for seed purpose. The Spike lets at the panicle base are still a bit green but are already hard. Thresh immediately to minimize field losses and deterioration of grain quality by hitting against wood of other suitable object. Hit the bundle 2 and a half hits of which two are as usual and one is half of usual force. Care should be taken not to mix with the other varieties.
