Conscious Sedation

• This include a continuum of states of consciousness ranging from minimal sedation to general anesthesia.

• It is a means to allow a person to tolerate an otherwise painful procedure with minimum risk and maximum tolerance

• The patient is sedated to the point where his response and awareness of pain are reduced. However, the patient can maintain his own airway and can be easily aroused to consciousnes.

Indications

• To perform major or minor procedures where the patient is anxious (or unwilling).

• To perform procedures on children who are anxious or are unable to stay still.

• Setting of fractures.

• Draining of abscess.

• During various dental procedures like dental implants, removal of wisdom tooth etc.

Agents Used

• Sedatives:

– Ketamine

– Midazolam

– Propofol

• Analgesics:

– Ketamine

– Morphine

– Fentanyl
