Problem Solving

• To use information you already known to solve problems

Travelling

• A cyclist travels 10 miles in the morning towards the sea – he finds peddling difficult as a breeze blows straight into his face

• Sun heats up land (via radiation) very quickly• Sea water takes much longer to heat• Air above the warm land heats up becoming less dense and rises• Colder, denser air from the sea takes its place causing a breeze from

the sea to the land

Travelling

• In the evening the Sun is no longer heating the land causing the land to cool very quickly, but the sea water keeps its heat for a long time

• Does the cyclist find it as hard to cycle home?

• As the sea keeps its heat the warm air rises causing the cooler air from the land taking its place, so the cyclist still feels a breeze in their face!

Temperature Increases

• The graph below shows the temperature increase of a substance over a period of time

• The substance starts of as a solid, and goes through two changes of state…

• The labels (a – e) describe some events which take place as the substance increases in temperature

• Write down the state or state change for each of the labels…
