Pro-SteelBrickFacedLintels

TechnicalDataTheFab-SteelStretcherBondLintelRangeisdesignedtoallowanopeningtobecreatedinasingleleafofmasonry,typicallytheexternalleafofacavitywithanintegratedbrickslipsoffitfeature.Thebrickslipsoffitfeatureisbondedtothelintelcarrierusingaspeciallyformulatedresinadhesiveinastretcher/runningbondtomatchseamlesslywiththefacingbrickworkandrevealswhererelevant.

Design&TestingBoththelintelsandthebrickslipshavebeenindependentlytestedbyNotifiedandTechnicalApprovalBodiestoevaluateandvalidatetheloadcapacity,physicalperformanceandlongtermdurabilityofallcomponents.ThelintelshavebeendesignedinlinewiththerequirementsofBSEN845-2&BS5977-1andtestedinlinewithBSEN846-9.ThebrickslipsaretestedusingtheguidanceofETAG034toevaluatetheacceleratedFreeze/Thawweatherresistancebothsaturatedanddriedoftheslipsbondedtobackingstructuresofvariousmaterialsincludingstainlesssteelandpowdercoatedgalvanisedsteel.Thetestsincludetheevaluationofbondstrengthanddurabilityofthebrickslipsbondedtostainlesssteelwhereaservicelifeof60yearscanbeachieved.Thebondstrengthandimpactresistanceofthebrickslipswastestedbeforeandaftertheacceleratedcyclicweatherteststovalidatetheintegrityanddurabilityofthesystem.Thetestsincluded:

• BondStrengthtestingusingETAG004asguidance-ControlandWeatheredsamples

• ImpacttestingtoISO7892-ControlandWeatheredsamples

Installation

Lintelsshouldalwaysbeproppedduringconstructiontoachievethesafeworkingloadcapacitiesdeclaredinthedesigntablesbelow.AseparateDPCisrequiredabovethelintel.Walltiesshouldinstalledwithin300mmofthelintelatamaximumof450mmcentrestoensurethatthemasonrycarriedbythelintelisrestrainedandanypotentialoverturninganddeflectionisminimised.

Thestandardlintelrangeissuppliedin150mmincrementallengths.Lintelsofalternativelengthsandloadcapacitiesoutsideofthedetailsprovidedinthefollowingloadtablescanbedesignedandsuppliedtomeetwithprojectspecificrequirements.Lintelsshouldbeselectedtoensurethataminimumof150mmbearingeithersideoftheopeningisalwaysachieved.

Lintels should always be propped during construction to achieve the safeworking load capacitiesdeclared in thedesign tablesbelow.A separateDPC is requiredabove the lintel.Wall ties shouldinstalledwithin300mmof the lintelatamaximumof450mmcentres toensurethat themasonrycarriedbythelintelisrestrainedandanypotentialoverturninganddeflectionisminimised.

The standard lintel range is supplied in 150mm incremental lengths. Lintels of alternative lengthsandloadcapacitiesoutsideofthedetailsprovidedinthefollowingloadtablescanbedesignedandsupplied tomeetwith project specific requirements. Lintels should be selected to ensure that aminimumof150mmbearingeithersideoftheopeningisalwaysachieved.

In accordance with NHBC requirements, lintels used in external walls should be installed with aseparate flexible damp proof course. This should be combined with either stop ends or as analternativetheDPCshouldextendbetween50and150mmbeyondtheendofthelintelbearing.

Restrictions1. LintelsmustneverbecuttolengthormodifiedinanywaywithoutpriorpermissionfromACS.2. Nomorethan1.5metresofbrickworkshouldbebuiltoffthelintelinonedayinaccordancewithPD

6697:2010.3. Where themethod for assessing the load carried by lintels is designed in accordancewith BS EN

1996-1-1itisassumedthat:a. ThemasonryisconstructedfollowingtherecommendationsofBSEN1996-2.b. Theheightofmasonryabovethelintelatmid-spanisnotlessthan0.6timestheclearspanofthelintel.c. SafetyAlthougheveryeffortismadetoremovesharpedgesduringthemanufactureoftheproduct,appropriatepersonalprotectiveequipmentshouldalwaysbewornwhenhandlingandinstallingmasonrysupporttoavoidinjury.

MaterialsPD 6697:2010 states that austenitic stainless steel must be used for products in contact with orembedded in an external wall for all buildings exceeding three storeys in a non-aggressiveenvironment. In aggressive environments, such as coastal sites, products in both leaves of anexternalwallshouldalwaysbeausteniticstainlesssteel.

ShuffleBrick

Pro-SteelStretcherBondLintelsaretypicallysuppliedwitha‘ShuffleBrick’arrangementtoallowthelinteltobecoursedintothefacingbrickworkregardlessofthewhethertheopeningstartsonahalfor fullbrick.Structuralopeningsaremost typically setatdivisionsof fullorhalfbrickdimensions.Theillustrationbelowdemonstrateshowthestretcherbondlintelshouldbesettoaccommodateforthevariouscoursingconditions.
