We are often told about the importance of preserving our environment, yet few actions are taken to fight against the problems with which the environment confronts.

T h e A im o f t h e P r o je c tThrough the international project “Pro Natura”, “Vasile

Lucaciu National College” has managed to mobilize four teams, led by the coordinating teachers so as to promote the possibilities of contribution to the maintenance of the health of the environment.

For now, in Romania, the concept of recycling cannot be exploited as in the case of other European countries. Yet this does not mean that each of us cannot do something to diminish the bad effects produced by the carelessness of people towards nature.

The first step is to reduce and reuse.

C o n t e x t Until 2050, Romania has the duty to reduce the consumption of

the Carbon Dioxide from the industrial areas up to 50%. It is a well known fact that in the past, the area from Baia Mare was greatly polluted, due to the exaggerated manufacturing of the

non-ferrous metals. The environment has not recovered since. In 1999, Baia Mare was declared an unfavorable area from

social-economic point of view. The city is also considered one of the most polluted ones from Europe.

With the help of four coordinating teachers, there have been formed teams in our high school, which

have run up some activities that will accomplish the purpose of the

project.

...Perhaps this thing will become a trend in time. And since we have to do with some tendencies, the first action inside of the project was the organization of the Green Ball in our high school.

Having a great success, the event gathered up over 200 students, who exposed not only their reusable material-made clothes, but also their positive attitudes towards the preservation of the health of nature.

The event took place on the 21st January.

The costumes were made of paper from magazines and sales leaflet, bags or carrier bags.

T h e P r a n k s P r o m This event took place on the 1st April, and it aimed

at raising funds to purchase seedlings.

During the prom, there also was a part in which “Vasile Lucaciu” National College sent their thoughts to the people

from Japan, as a result of the recent disaster that struck this country.

S u r v e y s

During February and March some of the students involved in the project interviewed random people from our city to find out what are, in their opinion, the biggest problems that our city faces.

• Those who were questioned have been rewarded with a calendar made of recycled paper.

S e e d l in g s p la n t in g• At the beginning of April, using the funds raised , a team made up of several students managed to plant over 500 seedlings.

Bicyc le Week• During 11 and 15 April, many students from “Vasile Lucaciu” National College came to school using a bicycle or, if they did not have any, they tried to use public transport.

Waste Management• In April, a whole week was dedicated to an action named Waste Management, at which students were asked to bring stuff that are no longer in their use, such as books, clothes or toys.

• All these things were donated to charities.
