This year, David Walliams kicked off Sport Relief with a splash when he announced he would swim the Thames for the charity. He embarked on the epic 140-mile swim down the stinky, dirty River Thames, picking up a tummy bug and other illnesses on the way. Nevertheless, he completed his amazing challenge in just eight days and raised more than £1 million.
Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton has become a wonderful ambassador for Sport Relief having kayaked the 2000 miles of the Amazon River and walked across a tightrope suspended between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station. This year, Helen has managed to go one step further, again. On January 4, Helen set off on her Polar Challenge to cross 500 miles by ski, kite-ski and bike to reach the South Pole. We will see how Helen fared on the live show. What will she do next year?
But, you don’t have to go to the extreme of swimming the Thames or skiing to the South Pole to raise money for Sport Relief! You can do your bit by simply walking one mile. For just £6 for adults and £3 for children, you can enter the Sport Relief
Mile. You will be sent a pack with sponsor forms for you to collect sponsorship from your friends and family. Do your bit to raise money for people less fortunate. There are hundreds of Miles being organised around the country on Sunday March 25, including loads right here in Derbyshire. To fi nd out where your closest Sport Relief Mile is taking place, visit www.sportrelief.com/the-mile. Simply type your postcode or town into the search box and see the list of Miles around you. Whether you want to walk one mile with your family, do three miles in fancy dress with your classmates or attempt the mighty six-mile challenge, there is a Sport Relief Mile for you. From the www.sportrelief.com website you can also order your fundraising pack so that you can raise as much money as possible. You might even be able to do a bit of celebrity spotting as a whole host of famous faces will also be taking to the streets.
So, get out there and raise some cash for a great cause, and have some fun!

RELIEF
If you want to take part in Sport Relief, whether it’s running the Mile or another way of fundraising, what better way to do it than in the offi cial Sport Relief socks? Leap into action with the striking red and white Union Jack- inspired socks, available from Sainsbury’s (adults £2.50, children £2). Show your personali-tee with the offi cial Sport Relief 2012 t-shirts! Made with Fairtrade cotton, raising money for Sport Relief, the t-shirts are just £8 for adults and £6 for juniors, or there are three limited edition designs at £10 each. Show everyone that you are supporting Sport Relief by wearing your special tee for all to see.
Other ways to raise money
If you can’t make the Mile on the Sunday, there are loads
of other ways that you can raise money for Sport Relief
2012. Here are some of our favourite ideas …
. Tasty cakes … with help from mum and dad - and
permission from your school, bake some cakes and sell
them at school
. Shhhh … attempt a sponsored silence. Get people
to sponsor you to keep your lips closed for a day. It’s
harder than it sounds
. Mufti fun … ask you teachers if you can have a mufti
day. Pay to go to school in your own clothes. The
money paid goes to Sport Relief
. Sweet treats … fi ll a jar with sweets and get
people to guess how many are in there. Pay to have
a guess and you might even win the jar!
. Keep fi t … get sponsored to walk to school every
day. Raise money and get fi t in time to do your Mile
. Give it up … ask for sponsorship to give
up your favourite thing for a week. Mine?
Chocolate. Let’s do it together
