WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIABETES?

• Type 1 Diabetes (formerly Juvenile Diabetes)

– Body does not make any insulin

• Type 2 Diabetes (formerly Adult Onset Diabetes)

– Disease in which the body either does not

make enough insulin or does not use

insulin properly

• Gestational

– The body does not use insulin properly

during pregnancy

• Pre-Diabetes

– Blood sugars are high but not high enough

to have diabetes

8

HOW A BODY WITHOUT DIABETES WORKS

9

Blood Sugar returns to

normal

Body makes insulin - a

hormone that puts the sugar

in the cells

Food breaks down to

glucose or “Sugar”-

KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY

17

November 28th is Family Health History Day – take advantage of the

upcoming Thanksgiving holiday to find out more about your family’s

health!

3 important questions to ask:

1. Does anyone in the family have type 2 diabetes?

2. Has anyone in the family been told they might get diabetes?

3. Did your mother get diabetes when she was pregnant?

WHICH RISK FACTOR FOR DIABETES CAN YOU DO

SOMETHING ABOUT?

1. Age

2. Race

3. Not being active

4. History of Gestational Diabetes

18

HOW DO I GET TESTED FOR DIABETES?

• See your doctor for blood tests

– Fasting Plasma Glucose

• 126 mg/dL or higher– A1C

• 3 month average

• Normal 5.6% or less

• Prediabetes 5.7-6.4%

• Diabetes 6.5%

19

A1C

20

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CONTROL AND OR PREVENT

DIABETES?

Uncontrolled Diabetes can cause

• Blindness (retinopathy)

• Kidney Disease (nephropathy)

• Nerve Disease (neuropathy)

• Heart Disease

• Skin Conditions

• Alzheimer

People with HbA1c levels at target range

reduce the risk of

• Eye Disease by 76%

• Kidney Disease by 50%

• Nerve Disease 60%

• Diabetes related deaths by 21%

21

* Talk to your doctor about the best target range for you

LOWERING A1C BY 1% HAS GREAT BENEFITS

22

How Families Can Prevent and Manage Diabetes, Together

Diabetes- It’s a

family Affair

• 40% of children are over weight

• On average, children aged eight to 11 spent 3.6

hours a day in front of a screen, nearly double the

suggested limit of 2 hours

• Parents that are more active and eat healthier

tend to have children that live healthier life styles
