PRESS RELEASE 5 March 2008
Creativity Celebrated at MOE’s Schools
Digital Media Awards 2008
1. Students and teachers received recognition for their creative video, animation and audio productions at the Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA) 2008 ceremony on 5 March 2008. Co-organized by the Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (School of Film and Media Studies), the event honoured the creations from 208 participating schools. 2. A total of 68 awards for the Students’ Competition (4 Platinum Awards, 15 Gold Awards, 14 Silver Awards and 35 Merit Awards) and 6 awards for the Teachers’ Competition (2 Gold Awards, 1 Silver Award and 3 Merit Awards) were given out at the ceremony. The guest of honour for the event was Mr Daniel Yun, Managing Director of MediaCorp Raintree Pictures. 3. Previously known as the Schools Video Awards, the ninth edition of the competition was re-branded in 2007 as the Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA). SDMA 2008 introduced two new categories - animation and audio – in addition to the original video category. As part of its re-branding, SDMA 2008 was held in collaboration with N.E.mation!, the Total Defence-themed animation competition initiated by Nexus (Central National Education Office). Other highlights included the Viewers’ Choice Awards and the use of High Definition (HD) formats in video production. More details of the entries and background information are given in Annex A. 4. The competition offered a variety of themes that reflected local as well as global issues. Participants were invited to express their views through different genres such as documentaries, drama and/or advertisements. A total number of 446 entries from 104 primary schools, 89 secondary schools, 14 junior colleges and Millennia Institute were received for the Students and Teachers’ Competitions. The names of the award winners are given in Annex B. 5. "The number of schools participating this year had increased by almost 20 percent," noted MOE’s Director of Educational Technology, Dr Koh Thiam Seng. He added, "There was also much improvement in the technical quality of the video entries, for example, in camera and audio work. Many schools were innovative and creative in coming up with varied storylines within the themes provided. The rebranding of the School Video Awards as the School Digital

INFORMATION SHEET
SCHOOLS DIGITAL MEDIA AWARDS CEREMONY 2008 1. The Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA) is organised for all primary, secondary and pre-university students and in-service teachers. Formerly known as the Schools Video Awards, the competition was first launched in 1999 with the aim of providing a platform for our students to express themselves creatively through video production. 2. In 2007, the competition was re-branded as the Schools Digital Media Awards (SDMA) to include media categories such as audio and animation. It strives to enhance participants’ understanding of the various types of media to create, engage and innovate. The entries reflect creativity and the wide repertoire of skills of the participants. 3. The SDMA 2008 comprises three categories – video, animation, audio – and is opened to Primary, Secondary, JC/CI students as well as teachers. 4. For the Students’ Competition, participants worked in teams of up to five students with a teacher-facilitator to produce a media product on stipulated themes. Each school could send in as many as three entries. In total, 423 entries were submitted for the competition. a) Video Category
Students can choose from three genres: i. Documentary - a five-minute documentary on the theme “Through
the Eyes of the Young”. ii. Drama - a ten-minute drama on any topic of their choice. iii. Advertisement - a one-minute advertisement on one of four
stipulated themes: • ”Conservation for Our Future”; • “Speak Good English Movement”; • ”Towards an Intelligent Nation”; • “Models in My Life”.
b) Animation Category
Students may submit a one-minute advertisement or three-minute drama clip for the competition. The four stipulated themes are: • “Towards an Intelligent Nation”; • “Reflections: A Look Into Our Past”; • “Singapore Today”; and
4
• “National Education”.
c) Audio Category
Students may submit entries from two different genres: • Advertisements - a one-minute audio clip on the themes
“Hobby/CCA” or the “Speak Good English Movement”. • Drama: a three-minute audio clip related to Social Emotional
Learning or any story related to character development and language acquisition.
5. For the Teachers’ Competition, participants were required to submit a media clip for classroom teaching, either as a trigger activity, main activity or for the closure of a lesson. Participants could work in teams of up to 3 teachers to produce a video, an animation or an audio clip. This year, 23 entries were submitted for the competition. 6. Past winning entries of the SVA and this year’s SDMA winning entries can be viewed at the MOE E-video website (www.evideo.edu.sg).
