ART, IN ALL ITS FORMS, IS ONE OF THE BUILDING

BLOCKS OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT. LEARNING TO

CREATE AND APPRECIATE VISUAL AESTHETICS

MAY BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO THE

DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AS THEY GROW UP.

ART CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR LANGUAGE

DEVELOPMENT FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE.

CREATIVITY HELPS CHILDREN TO APPROACH

TASKS FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AND

TO THINK ‘OUTSIDE OF THE BOX’, A SKILL THAT

WILL SERVE THEM WELL THROUGHOUT LIFE.

Children learn decision-making through art education, which strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other aspects of life. Children learn how to receive and give constructive feedback to each other’s work. Furthermore, most art disciplines are collaborative in nature. Through the arts, children practice working together, sharing responsibility, and compromising with others to accomplish a common goal. Lastly, when children get to practice following through with artistic endeavours that result in a finished product or performance, they learn to associate dedication with a feeling of accomplishment. Through art, children have the opportunity to learn these personal and social skills beyond the curriculum, and in a creative dimension.

After all, the essence of art is expressing oneself. This is of utmost relevance in the world today.

I congratulate St Ignatius College for taking this initiative, and augur similar projects in the future that promote the wellbeing of our children.

IT IS WITH PLEASURE THAT, FOR THE FIRST

TIME, ST IGNATIUS COLLEGE, IS PRESENTING

THIS ART EXHIBITION MADE UP OF OUR

STUDENTS’ WORK UNDER THE GUIDANCE

AND DIRECTION OF OUR ART TEACHERS. THE

IDEA OF THIS EXHIBITION WAS SPARKED OFF

BY A GENUINE DESIRE TO GIVE OUR COLLEGE

STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE

AND VENTURE OUT IN THE WORLD OF ART,

TO INTRODUCE THEM TO THE EXPERIENCE

OF SHOWING OFF THEIR ARTISTIC TALENTS

OUTSIDE THE WALLS OF THEIR CLASSROOMS,

TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES ON THE MICRO AND

THE MACRO LEVEL USING DIFFERENT MEDIA,

AS WELL AS TO ENHANCE THEIR CULTURAL

KNOWLEDGE OF NATIONAL HERITAGE AND

STRENGTHEN IN STUDENTS THE VALUE OF

SOLIDARITY, OF SHARING THEIR ARTISTIC

TALENT AND USING IT FOR THE BENEFIT OF

THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

Why the Palace Valletta?Thanks to Her Excellency, the President of Malta, Ms Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, and upon her invitation, our exhibition is being hosted at the Palace and under her patronage. This opened up for us the opportunity of presenting our exhibits for auction. All proceeds will go for the Community Chest Fund, so as a College, we appeal for generosity in favour of a very worthy cause.

Our intentions are to expose college students to one of many historic landmarks on our beautiful island, to help them understand the meaning of solidarity through their artistic skills, and to make them aware of the importance of water and its preservation, which point brings me to the next question.

Why the theme Water?Here my heartfelt thanks go to HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. for their full support in sponsoring this College Art Exhibition as part of their ‘HSBC Water Programme - Catch the Drop’ Campaign in collaboration with the Ministry for Energy and Health. This sponsorship was a great help to the success of this event. I also want to show my appreciation to Heritage Malta for their support in hanging and displaying all the exhibited art pieces. I would also like to thank the staff at both palaces, especially the staff at Valletta Palace for their availability and readiness to help with all our needs and requests.

I augur that all the Art pieces donated by our college students will be auctioned and convey to the successful bidder the same contentment, fulfilment and satisfaction experienced by the students in producing their piece of art. I would also like to extend my deep gratitude to the college heads of school, college staff and especially the art teachers who enthusiastically embarked on this exciting venture with their students as soon as the idea was communicated with them.
