President’s Message
Greetings to you all. It’s a busy, busy time here at WSA. We are working
hard planning WSA’s 75th National Annual Exhibition! The prospectus is out and
entries are due by February 27, 2016. Our 75th National will be hosted by the newly
constructed Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur, Alabama, May 15 – July 15,
2016. The Center will accommodate over 100 paintings for this exhibition. I hope
you will help us celebrate this landmark event by entering your wonderful works of
art.
The selection juror, Marilyn Hughey Phillis, AWS, NWS, holds an amazing
list of credentials and contributions to the art world. She has judged the internation-
al shows of the American and National Watercolor Societies. She is known for her
“expressive watermedia paintings ranging from representational to cosmic abstrac-
tion”.
The popular and talented artist Janet Rogers, AWS, FWS, SCWS, will select
the 75th Exhibition award winners. We anticipate $8000 in cash and merchandise
awards. Participants are already registering for the WSA workshop on May 12-14 by
Ms. Rogers. The Alabama Center for the Arts will provide a spaciously designed
classroom studio for the workshop and after-hour demo on May 13 by Ms. Rogers.
Registration deadline is April 30, 2016.
Please read and follow the 75th Exhibition Prospectus carefully as we desire
that every entry be successful. The website FAQs continue to be updated to answer
your questions and to explain WSA exhibition rules. You will find clarification of
Prospectus requirements such as:
• Original art definition
• Aqueous Watercolor manner
• Wood frame requirement
Included are examples of acceptable and unacceptable frames. FAQs are found un-
der the RESOURCES tab. Also under this tab you will find TIPS that provide “how-
to” help for entering WSA exhibitions.
WSA exhibitions would not be possible without the continued donations of
many art material companies, societies, and individual contributors. Award donors
for the 74th National are listed in this Newsletter. Please check them out and let’s
“support those who support us”.
A few updates:
• The 2015 Alabama Members Show is posted on our website. If you missed the
show at the Birmingham Library, please view the artwork online as this exhibit rep-
resents the best of our Alabama members. Sincere thanks go to Charlotte McDavid

• The First WSA Online National Juried Exhibi-
tion is under construction by our Webmaster. We
very much appreciate your patience with us in
the delay of this new venue.
• The existing members gallery featured on the
website is being changed and upgraded to provide
a better service. You will be receiving the details
about this opportunity to promote yourself and
your art.
We continually seek to improve the web-
site to make it easier to navigate and to find the
information you want. We are all volunteers, but
we are working very hard to leverage the im-
portant tools the internet provides. I urge you to
connect with other members online by participat-
ing in the upcoming bio/gallery space on our web-
site and “like” our Facebook page. Watch for oth-
er social media coming to WSA soon.
Your Board of Directors continues to work
hard to make this wonderful organization run
smoothly and function in your best interest,
thereby laying the groundwork for future success.
Why do we work hard and serve as volunteers?
We enjoy that wonderful feeling of accomplish-
ment in giving something back. I especially enjoy
meeting great artists and forging new friendships
along the way. If you would like to work with a
terrific team and contribute to the advancement
of watercolors, please contact us. Your questions,
suggestions and comments are always welcome.
Happy New Year and Happy Painting!
