Infectious Disease

100

Late symptom is coughing up

blood.

What is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is:TB is the largest single cause of death from

infectious disease in the U.S. The tiny rod-shaped bacilli travel in the moist

particles in one’s breath. They stay suspended in the air until sucked into another person’s lungs.

Although the body fights off most of the TB bacilli, the remaining germs wait for a sign of weakness to reproduce again. By trying to kill the germ, the body kills some healthy lung cells leading to many different cases, all concluding in death.

Infectious Disease

200

People considered “outcasts” and

are outcast from societies.

What is Leprosy?

Leprosy is:Leprosy is one of the least contagious infectious

diseases because the germ seeks out the coldest places in the human body and grows very slowly.

More than 90% of the people in the world could not get leprosy if they tried; others would have to live with an infected patient for years in order to get it.

Leprosy is not fatal because this disease invades only certain nerves in the body, only ones the body can live without such as the eyelid.

Infectious Disease

300

Spread by rodents.

What is The Plague?

The Plague is:Bubonic plague cannot spread from person to person

without a flea to carry it. The flea will bite a rat, the rat will transport the disease, another flea will bite the rat and transport the disease to the human.

Many people did understand the spread of the disease making it even easier for the infected rats to board ships and spread the disease to areas across the seas.

Once a flea bites a person the lymph drainpipes carry the plague to the nearest lymph nodes. The nodes swell because of the battle between the bacilli toxins and the immune system cells. One quarter to one half of the bubonic plague victims will survive.

Infectious Disease

400

Infected by the bite of a

mosquito.

What is Malaria?

Malaria is:The mosquito bites a malaria-infected human and

sucks up the germ in the blood. Once the mosquito bites another human it transfers the disease into the human making them infected.

Malaria is the 3rd deadliest infectious disease. An infected person would have cycles of fevers. They

would have fevers one day, sweat through the night, and wake up fine. They would be fine for 2-3 days and then the cycle would begin again.

Infectious Disease

500

Infected by drinking

contaminated water.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is:The germ releases a toxin that jams pumps in

the lining of a person’s intestines. This causes the intestines to draw water out of the body.

If a person drinks a significant amount of water once infected, they have a greater chance of survival because most people die of dehydration with this disease.

Due to the severe vomiting and diarrhea, it was discovered that this germ lived in the water and when a person drank “dirty” water they would become infected.

Infectious Disease

600

Leading cause of death in adults

ages 15-59.

What is AIDS?

AIDS is:Was first discovered in homosexual males in their thirties,

but now it affects people of all genders, race, and age.AIDS does not show symptoms for many years and during

those years it can infect other people. It destroys the person’s immune system making them more vulnerable to other diseases which usually kill them.

AIDS is spread through the sharing of bodily fluids where the virus can easily go from the infected body to another.

Drugs have been found to prevent symptoms, but nothing is able to cure this devastating disease yet.

Double Jeopardy

All or Nothing

2 diseases whose vaccination is

visible through a dime-sized scar on

the upper arm.

What are Tuberculosis

and Smallpox?

Smallpox is:Smallpox presents itself first with fever, then

chicken-pox-like pustules which swell, burst, and dry

Smallpox was easy to eradicate because it only infected humans

Once a person was infected with smallpox, they were immune. One scientist discovered that once a person was inoculated with cow-pox, they could not get smallpox.
