X-A presents“Upacara Gas Letup”March

2011

Background

With “Scienculture” theme, we will present it in form of an experiment called ‘Upacara Gas Letup’. Through this experiment we will try to change people’s thoughts on chemistry by showing the esthetical side of chemistry without getting rid of the genius theories behind it all.

Problem Statement

0How can sound be produced from a chemical reaction?0How does the capillarity process of

certain chemicals occur in a silicon solution?

Aim/Goal

0To find out how sound can be produced from a chemical reaction.0To investigate the capillarity process of

chemicals in a silicon solution.

Abstract

The ‘Upacara Gas Letup’ experiment will be conducted in the form of a miniature traditional ceremony. The aim of this experiment is to find out how sound can be produced from a chemical reaction and to investigate the capillarity process of chemicals in a silicon solution.

Materials0Natrium silicate solution (15-

20%)0 Iron III chloride0Cobalt II chloride0Copper II nitrate0Chromium III chloride0Copper II Sulfate0Nickel II nitrate0Beaker (500ml)0Used water bottles 0Erlenmeyer bottle (500ml)

0Erlenmeyer cork (adjustable)0Plastic tube0Sufficient amount of NaOH

solution with 4M concentration

0Soap water0Carbon electrode0Adaptor

Steps0Pour NaOH solution into the Erlenmeyer bottle.0Close the Erlenmeyer bottle with a cork that has been

equipped with a carbon electrode and a plastic tube.0Tightly close the Erlenmeyer bottle with the cork.0Attach the plastic tube that is connected with the

Erlenmeyer bottle to the soap water in the glass beaker.0Connect the carbon electrode to an adaptor. If the soap

water has produced bubbles, burn the bubbles with a match. This will cause a mini explosion.

0To accelerate the process and increase the amount of bubbles produced, turn up the voltage from the adaptor.

Conclusion

0Sound can be produced from a chemical reaction between hydrogen gas and soap water.0The chemical reaction between chemical

powder and silicon solution will cause capillarity to occur.
