Premier’s Debating
Challenge On Thursday the 30th of May EA Southee Public School competed
in the Premier’s Debating Challenge for Years 5 and 6. The EA
Southee debating team has 5 members who rotate for different
debates as each debate can only have a maximum of 4 debaters.
The first debate was against Temora West Public School on the
topic that “All assignments and homework should be completed as
group work”. The second debate was against Cootamundra Public
School on the topic that “All unhealthy advertisements should be
banned”. Our debating team was the Negative team for both
debates. This was the first time that this team had debated and
they did very well in both debates. They have learned lots of new
debating and rebutting strategies to use when they compete
against Temora Public School and Ariah Park Public School at the
end of the term.

EA Southee in the Spotlight
Friday 21st of May 2019 Term 2 Week 8
EA Southee Public School was one of the schools in the Riverina highlighted on a Riverina Tour
by Education Directors from Temora, Wagga and Junee Networks along with Principals from
Sydney, Wagga, Humula and Cootamundra.
Each school showcased innovative and powerful learning opportunities for the students at their
school. EA Southee showcased the New Flexible Learning Space for Stage 3 and the Positive Be-
haviour for Learning process that have improved student learning outcomes at our school. Al-
pine Learning Network focused on the diversity of small schools and their environmental edu-
cation outdoor learning projects. Sturt Public School showcased Science Technology Engi-
neering and Mathematics Programs (STEM) and the impact this has had across their school.
The Directors and Principals all agreed it was a valuable opportunity for executives to see
firsthand the excellent learning opportunities offered to students across the Riverina Region
and especially at EA Southee Public School.

Collaboration in Team 3
Friday 21st of May 2019 Term 2 Week 8
In Team 3 we do a lot of collaborative group work. This term we have been learning about Forces
in Science. As part of this unit Team 3 had to work in small groups to design and create an
effective “marble run” using only newspaper and tape. The “marble run” had to be created on a
chair and safely transport the marble from the top to the bottom of the chair. Team 3 discovered
that they had to cooperate to re-evaluate their designs multiple times. The groups had to make a
range of adjustments before testing their final design. Team 3 then reflected on their designs and
the forces and factors that were impacting on the marble runs such as gravity, direction, speed,
friction and slope. The forces unit will continue this week with the students designing and
creating catapults in pairs or small
groups.

NRL Clinic
Years 3 & 4 have been working collaboratively together over the past term through project
based learning. Project-based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that engages
students in rich and authentic learning experiences. During this project students have been
gathering information about an animal they had been assigned. Using mind maps and
information report templates the students have had to use their research skills to collect
information about the animal. The students are now in the process of creating presentations
and information booklets and then will create a diorama. With the knowledge gained, students
are then going to visit Altina Wildlife Park in Darlington Point where they will get to see some of
the animals they have been researching.
Kinder & 1/2D Gymnastics
Stage 2 Project-based Learning
Kindergarten & Year 1/2D are participating in gymnastics every Friday until the end of
Term. We are learning how to control and move our bodies. Forward roll, balancing and
rolling are a few of the gross motor activities involved in the program.
