GUIDED MISSILES

What is a Guided Missile?

• A guided missile is a self-propelled projectile used as a weapon. Missiles are typically propelled by rockets or jet engines.

Who used the first Guided Missile?

• Tippu Sultan• Mysorean rockets were the

first iron-cased rockets that were successfully deployed for military use.

• Hyder Ali, the 18th century ruler of Mysore, and his son and successor, Tipu Sultan used them effectively against the British East India Company.

Principle involved in Guided Missile Technology.

1 •TRACKING

2 •GUIDANCE

3 •FLIGHT

TRACKING•  The launcher

"tracking" radar continuously monitors the target, while computers continuously calculate target location, direction and speed.   Human judgment is involved in identification too.

GUIDANCE SYSTEM

• A guidance system is a device or group of devices used to navigate a missile.

FLIGHT SYSTEM• The flight system uses

the data from the targeting or guidance system to navigate the missile in flight , allowing it to counter inaccuracies in the missile or to follow a moving target.

Components of a Guided Missile

• WAR HEAD• GUIDANCE SYSTEM• ROCKET ENGINE • BALLISTA• Grid Fins

WAR HEAD

• A War Head is an Explosive or Toxic material used in a Guided Missile.

• It is used to destroy Enemy vehicles or buildings.

• It consists of an Explosive material , and a Detonator as a payload.

TYPES OF WAR HEADS

Explosive

Chemical

Biological

EXPLOSIVE WAR HEAD

•An explosive charge is used to disintegrate the target, and damage surrounding areas with a shockwave.

Chemical War Head

•A toxic chemical, such as nerve gas is dispersed which is designed to injure or kill human beings.

Biological War Head

•An infectious agent such as Anthrax is dispersed ,which is designed to sicken or kill humans.

ROCKET ENGINE• A rocket engine

or simply rocket is a jet engine that uses only stored propellant mass for forming its high speed propulsive jet.

BALLISTA• The Ballista is a

Powerful Weapon conceived as a giant crossbow , to eject heavy darts single or in groups.

• It is also sometimes referred to as a bolt thrower.

GRID FINS• Grid Fins are a type of

Flight control Pads used in Guided Missiles.

• Grid Fins play a major role in the Flight system of a Guided Missile.

• They are used to change the motion of a Guided Missile during its flight.

FUEL SOURCE OF A GUIDED MISSILE

Guided missiles use nitrogen based solid

propellants as their fuel source.

TYPES OF GUIDED MISSILES

• SURFACE TO SURFACE MISSILES• AIR TO AIR MISSILES• SURFACE TO AIR MISSILES• AIR TO SURFACE MISSILES• BALLISTIC MISSILES• CRUISE MISSILES• SUBMARINE LAUNCHED

BALLISTIC MISSILES• INTER CONTINENTAL BALLISTIC

MISSILES• ANTI-TANK GUIDED MISSILES• ANTI-SATELLITE MISSILES

COUNTRIES HAVING MISSILE TECHNOLOGY

• FRANCE• UNITED STATES OF AMERICA• GERMANY• RUSSIA• CHINA• INDIA• JAPAN• UNITED KINGDOM• AUSTRALIA• PAKISTAN

MISSILE TECHNOLOGY IN INDIA

• SURFACE TO SURFACE MISSILES (EXAMPLE : AGNI-1)

• AIR TO AIR MISSILES (EXAMPLE : ASTRA)

• SURFACE TO AIR MISSILES (EXAMPLE : AKASH)

• AIR TO SURFACE MISSILES (EXAMPLE : NAG)

• BALLISTIC MISSILES (EXAMPLE : AGNI-2)

• CRUISE MISSILES (EXAMPLE : NIRBHAY)

• SUBMARINE LAUNCHED BALLISTIC MISSILES (EXAMPLE:BRAHMOS)

• INTER CONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILES (EXAMPLE:AGNI 5)

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MISSILES

ADVANTAGES• Missile combat employment is

completely autonomous• Missile flexible flight trajectories• High supersonic speed at a whole

trajectory• High effectiveness in case of

strong electronic and fire counter measures

• High level of mobility• Minimal crew.

DISADVANTAGES• Missiles can be destroyed in flight

(either with Defender missiles or with a well-timed smart bomb detonation)

• Missiles have to rely on the ground-based radar for guidance

• Nuclear missiles make plants, soil and rain radioactive .
