Eagles After Hours news:
Our Eagles After Hours after school pro-
gram is going strong every Tuesday and
Thursday! We start up again at the end of
January. We often have over 200 students
staying after school to work on homework,
participate in athletics, learn how to cook, work out or play games!
Our after school program is “the new neighborhood,” because our stu-

From our Health Office:
It's a New Year and many people make
New Year's resolutions, especially
in the area of weight loss. Here are
some health tips to help you succeed
if weight loss is a goal for you or
your family.
1. Keep a daily journal of your di-
et. Journals help you observe what you've been eating and
help you stay accountable and on track.
2. Have a weight loss partner. Having a family member or
friend help you stay on track can be fun and helpful.
3. Try a new exercise routine that you know you will do.
If you enjoy the exercise, such as walking or riding a
bike, you are more likely to do it. If you walk at least
10,000 steps per day (you can purchase an inexpensive pe-
dometer), you are more likely to lose weight.
4. Use the Clock method to help with portion control. Di-
vide your dinner plate into a clock by quarters. One half
of the plate should contain green or yellow vegetables,
1/4 of your plate can be a protein (lean meats: beef,
fish, poultry, or pork), 1/4 of your plate should be a
whole grain (whole wheat bread, pasta or brown rice).
People who eat whole grains usually have smaller waist
measurements. You can also add a small cup of fruit to
your dinner plate. Keep track of beverages and use skim
or low fat milk and avoid drinks high in sugar.
5. Avoid fried foods and saturated fats. Olive oil and
Canola oil are healthier choices.
6. Try a new healthy food choice at least once a week and
allow your taste buds time to adapt (it takes about 15
bites of a new food to adapt to the change in taste).
Adding herbs and spices helps food taste great, especial-
ly if one is reducing saturated fats.
7. Active parents make for active, healthy and happy
children.
Also, the flu is widespread. Please wash your hands
for at least 20 seconds and often to prevent illness
this flu season. Good luck and stay healthy!
